helped a friend out with getting a replacment ECU for his jetta after the original one failed. my problem is the ECU will not let me recode it from auto to manual with VCDS. does anyone know if its possible to edit the binary to make it a manual ECU? i cannot find an original manual file for it anywhere. this is all in an early 2002 jetta VR6. The ECU part number 021906018S. here is the factory file im working with.

yes VCDS cannot code this afaik.

There is an address in file to make change to a manual file.  I will take a look when i have time.

The M is an Immo2 file. OP has a 2002 car so he probably needs a T-box file.

I don't have a valid one haha. My car came with a T-box but my tool hosed up the flash so now I run a M-box file.

018R is used as manual tranny ECU for AFP engine the same MYs.

thanks guys, the last posted file worked perfect. ECS Tuning sent him an ECU for an auto with tiptronic and he ordered a manual and they refused to take it back or switch him cuz they swore it was the right one.

From the VCDS lable file, for that PN ECU,

021-906-018-AFP

C02,+1 = Brake Electronics (ABS)
C03,+2 = Airbag
C04,000x?: Transmission
C05,1 = Manual Transmission

So the ECU coding is "00031" for MT, or "00033" for AT.  Same ECU PN for both transmissions.

I don't think that you can just recode for a different transmission.

It definitely doesn't switch to a different set of calibrations. At best, it would just stop attempting to communicate with the TCU, but it still would not be optimal.

why is it not possible? for example i have an golf 4 r32 engine with manual transmission and wand to swap for dsg ...
if ill swap the whole parts and recode the ecu from "2" to "3" my dsg wont be running properly?

this means when connecting automatic ecu to manula car we shouldn't connect the tcu and the car will good

I have an golf 4 r32 manual file which I want to convert to automatic / dsg

So I looked up at a dsg 3.2 file and almost all maps for "cvt" are available in the manual file

I tried to recode the car configuration but if I reflash the file it doesn't throw an error code for missig automatic transmission...


So is there a switch to enable cvt/dsg in the manual file when all other maps are available!??

Unless you have the Login PIN (SKC) from memory you are not able to adjust the auto to manual files.

I have 2 ECU's at home for a 24v VR6. One a USA and the other Euro version, both work.
