Downloaded it and installed it on a Windows Vista machine. All went well. Software recognizes cables and populates the list of interfaces by itself, which is WIN. I had my FTDI cable and a friend's cable plugged in at teh same time and the list of interfaces showed both. Both cables worked to "Read Info" "Read DTC" and "Clear DTC" which was nice.
The "Read" and the flashing buttons on the software's GUI were not high lighted. I tried two cars. My AWM 2001.5 A4 with the CH box and a GIAC flashed Mbox S4. On both cars the behaviour was the same.
I am theorizing that the GIAC flashed ECU has the reading functions disabled, and the A4 is simply not supported.
Are either of these theories true? Thanks.
(I do not have a Windows machine right now, but I will throw a virtualization of the OS for future attempts.)

If you hover of the red highlighted fields it will tell you what the problem is.
You need a memory layout loaded before you can read. You need a flash file loaded and a memory layout loaded before you can write.

You should be able to use the 29F800BB layout for both cars you mentioned.
I will be improving the user interface in a future release to address the issue of the program not telling you why the buttons are disabled.

There has got to be something I am missing here. Can I get a sample of a memory layout file?
I remember running across documents taht describe the memory layout, but your software needs a file, so I assume there is a aprticular format in which it needs that information.

In the NefMoto program files directory there are a whole bunch of memory layout files. Every memory layout you need is already included.
They are named *.memorylayout.xml

Oh... (I feel dumb.) I am not a Windows guy and it was hard enough using somebody else's machine to do this. Needless to say I have Vista or whatever it was he was running. I am a unix person.
Will get my new memory for the laptop and will be able to run a virtualization of Windows & and then I will not be asking too many stupid questions...

It's not a stupid question, you are just pointing out that my user interface is not communicating clearly. The default file open location for the memory layout browse button, should take you right to where the memory layout files are.
Once I have finished adding more features to flashing, I will be overhauling the user interface to make it more understandable, and allow for other operations besides flashing.

Simple success. I pulled two flashes, one from my US 1.8T 5speed AWM (CHbox) and one from a tuned US 2.7T 6speed Mbox. There seem to be no fatal errors but I have noticed in the logs that there are some complains about mismatching checksums.
I do not want to post the 2x 1.5MB logs here and bloat the site, a PM is coming with the location of where you can retrieve them. Comments are appreciated, so that we know when things go right and when wrong.
The software seems solid, and I really like that there are a lot of things spit out in the log files. That is perfect for a developing code and for the end-user who is more interested in just Pressing ENTER.

I checked the logs you sent me, and you don't need to worry about those checksum messages. Those checksum incorrect messages are for determining if the memory sector needs to be read. The program will only read memory sectors that don't match the checksum of a blank memory sector.
The logs indicate that everything was read correctly without any errors.
