I've been asked to repair a VIN on a ME 7.1.1 from a mk4 GLI. The mk4 GLI they have originally came with a 2.8 VR6, which IIRC was ME7.1. The engine is in, and I was told the ME7.1.1 they have was flashed for the 3.2 (This alone, I'm not sure what ECUs work for this type of swap to start with) and had an immo off. I'm assuming it won't start since they are contacting me. This started out as asking about a VIN repair, as they think that the VIN was not programmed at all, or wrong VIN was. However, I don't think this would even matter in an immo off application? Unless the mk4 cluster is doing something that I am unaware of maybe.... not sure what that would even be though.

I have not done this particular swap before. But I know the 7.1.1 has 3 HW revisions. I am unsure if a specific one is needed or not, could be part of the issue. I also don't know what the correct way to do this is, so I am trying to lookup what I can now. Not finding a ton of information though.

Asking for PNs since I wasn't provided anything.

Anyone have any input or ideas on this? Hoping maybe someone has done this swap before.

Edit: Sorry, mixed up r32 and GLI. So, was a GLI with a 2.8 vr6, now has a 3.2 from an r32.

US spec 12V had ME7.1 indeed, US spec 24Vs are ME7.1.1
12V PN are 021906018...
24V 022906032BL/CR (Auto) 022906032BM/CS/DM (Manual)
R32 022906032EG
TT MK1 3.2 022906032FK/DR

I just finished doing that swap myself, but it's a bit different as I went with the ECU of the donor car.
But in your case I would find out what exactly the problem is first.

Thanks, yeah I think I misread when I was looking quick, must have saw 12v not 24v. Just gonna wait for PNs and go from there instead of guessing so much. But if I had to, wonder if someone flashed the mk5 ecu not the mk4, which apparently seems like people accidentally do.

The usa market 2.8 24v and the 3.2 24v mk4 generation have the same ecu hardware wise, you can cross flash the 24v ecu to the r32 without a problem. The r32 has 2 banks of o2 sensors while the 2.8 only has one. You need to remove the 0k ohm resistor on the back side of the ecu to put the ecu in bootmode and if you want to keep port flashing enabled you will need to reinstall the resistor

If you are in the market for a tune and would like the ease of downloading and flashing a dyno tested tune for a fair price check out https://instatune.sellfy.store/
