I’m trying to make sure that I can access boot-mode flashing if necessary.  Most of the issues that people report with this cable/software is that they can’t get past the “Boot Mode Inactive” error.

In my case, I can get past that but then things get goofy.  Sometimes I can read the ECU info and sometimes it just errors out.  If I try to write an image, again sometimes it errors out right away, other times I get a scrolling status bar.  I’ve never gotten it to put a whole flash on the box, though.

Any pointers on this kind of intermittent behavior?

If you just get a rolling bar and no readout/flash, you most likely are grounding the pin too long. Remove the ground when you see the bar start... write, hit connect again without disconnecting the ecu.

The boot pin only has to be grounded AS you power up the device. Remove it BEFORE you push any other buttons.
