I've been trying to get hold of a spare ECU for my brothers S4 for a couple weeks now with no luck.

I've seen a few A6 and Allroad ECU's on ebay, and i'm wondering if theres any decent way of telling if i can flash S4 code (be it D-Box or M-Box or whatever) onto it?

theres a couple on ebay EG:

4Z7907551E

I know on 1.8T ECU's most ME7.5 code is interchangable, and i've managed to flash TT225 code onto both a 180hp and a 150hp Automatic ECU.

Is the ME7.1 on the S4 similar? I know later allroads seem to use an ME7.1.1 ECU and these arent compatible, but both of those ECU's appear to be ME7.1

AFAIK any ecu with a 29f800BB memory layout, 1024k flash chip, and a 32kb eeprom chip should work.  This includes all ME 7.1 2.7t ECUs from early A6's and Allroads. Read up on it here http://s4wiki.com/wiki/Generations

I believe ECUs from 2002 and 2003 A4 1.8t use the same chips and memory layout. I am not entirely sure but a good direction for your search at least.

Hmm your saying ANY ECU will work so long as it has that hardware?

The ME7.5 1.8T ECU's are 29F800BB but i wouldnt have thaught they'd run ME7.1 code...

I'm sure i come across something elsewhere on the forum about people flashing iirc 1.8T code onto a 1.0 or 1.4 ECU...

You will know the answer to that question if you look at ECU hardware at least once.

Ofcourse, but until i get a spare ECU i cant look at the hardware Wink

I'll just stick to 2.7T units i guess. Tried eBay but no luck, only a few breakers wanting about 200 for them and i'm not paying that much for a spare ECU. Was just hopeful that some other ECU's would be compatible that would be easier to find!

Any early A6 or Allroad will do.
I just bought one the other day for 55 euros.

Try car forums, there are not many on eBay.

Not sure if any 2.7t me7.1 will work. I have both a 2000, and a 2001 2.7t a6, and the ecu's have different guide pins preventing you from installing them in the other car.

I'm obviously new to this, but I can tell you there is a difference.

There is ME7.1 and ME7.1.1 for the 2.7TT, those are not interchangeable.
The rest should be pretty much, but I have not really checked it from this angle.

All I know is that a 1999 A6 2.7TT ECU works just fine on my 2001 Audi RS4 for example.

was me7.1.1 out in 2001? ECU in question is an AA in a 2001 audi a6 2.7t m6.

The posts in the ECU plug are different to differentiate manual ECUs from automatic ECUs.
I've seen an ecu where the posts were removed and then it doesn't matter anymore as long as the flash matches the setup.
A manual ECU flash won't work in an automatic car - you'll get an invalid coding error but it might run and i think it's the same for an automatic flash in a manual car.
I was able to take a 02 A6 T box and flash an 02 S4 L box and it works great.
Me 7.1.1 uses different pins for some sensors and outputs so interchanging a 7.1 with a 7.1.1 won't work.
The hardware seems to be identical, might be just a flash change.

I just put an mbox in my 2000 s4 that originally came with an abox and it works great only difference is that the mbox s4's have ESP so u have a fault for abs no communication.

you should be able to recode the ecu for a non-esp car, there's info in the ross tech site and s4wiki about that.

Search eBay for a specific part number. (e.g., 8D0907551M, "8D0 907 551M", "8D0 907 551 M", etc) using title and description search.

I found a spare L-box ECU in about 5 minutes, it was listed as a Passat ECU or some damn thing, but the picture and part number checked out, and I've been running and tuning it for the last month.  It was advertised for $120+shipping BIN, but I shot a best offer of $80 shipped, and it was accepted.  Lots of auto wreckers put these things up, not knowing exactly what they are, and want to turn them over fast.
