Hi ,

Ive found this bin. Should be OK (Dont know much). Anyway Im connected with OBD 2 to my Golf and can't read ECU (I want to first do the Backup before Flashing). I have a basic knowledge about Flashing (Mostly BIOS on PC not a Car).

So i run NefMoto , choose cable. Choose memory layout to : ME7 29F800 (This is the part where I think this isnt the right memory layout)And click read from ECU.
I attach the log.

Somebody with Dumb and idiot-proof method how to get this done ?  Thx. (Dont want to spend 1000Dollars on Chiptuning which will do the same)

you've overlooked one thing: most 1999 golfs do not have flashable ECUs, they run 2xPLCC32 chips in them  Grin Grin Grin

Exactly, so get that soldering iron & hot air station out.

Connect diagnostics to ECU and see what number it reports.

Or pull the ECU, but it seems like in the world we currently live in, removing an ECU from a car is too difficult for most aspiring tuners.

Plugging in a single socket is usually faster than removing the ECU... But yeah I agree on the "removing ECU" part.
IMO before you flash an ECU you need to have all the tools and knowledge to clean up your mess if something goes wrong at least on those ECU's where it is still possible to do that.

I am somewhat confused. Pardon my ignorance. I have a 98 beetle tdi. I thought it could only be flashed by unsoldering the two chips and putting them in a jig. I had Rocketchip done a few years ago and he had a hot air station at the get together. I would love to be able to tweak a few things that he did - although it is a great tune. But it is my understanding it cannot be done through obd, even if I remove the ecu.
