EDC15 is possible but you cannot write to it anymore afterwards, only in boot mode, so you have to be sure of what you are going to write to it.

I have not devoted too much time to diesel ECU's, but wasn't all the read/write functionality on EDC15 in the ROM?

I too have an EDC15 (98 Beetle TDI/ALH). It was chipped by a pro, but I really need to tweak a few parameters due to a nasty slow down shudder. It was my understanding (based on very little) that I had to unsolder the two chips and flash new ones in a jig and solder them back in (or solder in a chip socket)...
