If I was to convert from troublesome tiptronic to simple manual set up
What ecu wise would need changing or is it just a case of VCDS and recode options?? Engine ecu and clusters only?
Car in question a4 2002 2.0 16v

You could do it with vag-com only. Just recode the ecu so that it doesn't look for an input from the tcu, and recode the gauges (same reason).

I think in the b6's there's a bit of an order to the recoding-first the abs, then the ecu, and finally the gauges. Someone else will likely chime in.

Even if he flashes a manual file he'll still have to recode everything with vag-com.

Recoding the ECU to manual does NOT change the numerous calibrations that are different between an auto and manual. It will run, but it will be far from optimal.

So I'm assuming it would have to be flashed with a manual file and recoded to reach optimal correct?

It depends on the ECU in question.

Some ECU's have double mappings - for manual and for automatic.
Then it is possible to just recode the ECU.

On some cars, if a manual version was made, there was a different part number ECU, if this is the case you need to flash your ECU contents with the manual ECU contents.

However, some cars were never offered in manual - RS6 for example. And then you are in for a world of hurt.
