i have genuine VCDS, although i don't thhink it will work in dumb mode, would the elm 327 work? or shall i splash out on the £7 ebay special

I dont know about ELM cable ,but why dont you just try ? You just plug the cable and see if it is available in the nefmoto devices ,above.
I used an old VagCom (genuine) cable and a cheap china blue.

Every single VCDS cable I've tried has worked from the Hex-CAN down to the KII.

Cool cool... Will give the VCDS lead a try, I won't be attempting anything til next week. Still got to read through the info
