Hello, Iv on with putting a R32 motor into my mk2 golf, A local auto electrician told me he could remove the immo for £40. I payed the guy and got my ecu back but the engine still wont spark. I think hes robbed me if im honest.

So iv took it upon myself to learn the process. From what i have read all you need to do is dump the eeprom data change two values then re calculate the checksum.

Iv done a little of this stuff before fiddling with xbox's but never on a car ecu.

I was planning to dump the image using argdub's tool, But i'd prefer to do it on a bench rather than in the car. Could i just give the ecu +12v and -12v and a wire to the data pin on my OBD usb plug?

As for the editing, I was planning to do it in a hex editor, I normally use HxD. This doesnt seem to be a problem.

Checksum, Iv seen tools flying around forums, But the ones iv stumbled across don't seem to support me7.1.1. Is such a tool available?

obviously re-write the eeprom using argdub's tool.

A push in the right direction would be great,

Also iv read something about putting the ecu into boot mode? Is this necessary if so how can this be done.

immo will let the car run for 2 seconds and then cut off. if it doesnt start at all, i doubt your guy robbed you.

Thats put a downer on my theory then, The project has been stood for over a year due to circumstances and im getting back onto it very soon. It will be interesting to see if he actually has removed the immo before i start the project again. (hopefully within the month) So any insight would still be greatly appreciated.

When you have the ecu out and a cable, I will help you.
But if you got no spark this may not be the problem?

assuming the car would start and die before, i had the same issue with my ecu.  if it does not start after immo defeat, the ecu is indeed chipped.  you cannot use a generic immo off .bin, you must modify the original 5P08C3 .bin that contains the original vin tied to that tune.

at least this is in my experience.

there is absolutely NO reason to use a "generic" immo off file. that is just crazy. it takes 10 seconds to modify the original file.
using a generic file is just lazy. ONLY if the e2p was damaged or corrupted in a way would be a valid reason to use a generic or non-original e2p file.

Modifying the file shouldnt be a problem, its getting the binary file from the eeprom is what i cant find much info on, Especially for this specific chip. Any pointers to do it on a bench ?

Convinced you're going about this the wrong way.  With the immo not working, it'll start and run for two seconds, then cut out.

You've not got that, so the immo is the last of your worries. Get it running first, does the pump prime when you turn the key?

Only way I've been able to write these eeproms has been with a chipburner I'm afraid. I desolder, read, turn them off, and then write the data back before reinstalling the chip. Takes about 5 minutes once the hot airs warmed up.

I've had some success with argdubs tool, it claims to have written successfully, but the data wasn't changed.

this is the way i flash these chips also, only works with burner.
