This is my first tuning related post and I'm not shy about stating I am a n00b when it comes to tuning (but that's why I'm here). To start I would like to state I've done plenty of searching and reading and am aware of how tables are moved and encrypted in GIAC files. I've seen a few posts where people have stated they've been able to modify commercial files successfully, but they don't mention the method used.

I have a 2002 S4. I swapped in a GIAC X Mbox ECU and really like the results it gives. I do have an EGT sensor going south as well as a bad rear O2 sensor. So I picked up a "stock" MBox ECU (turned out to not be stock when I looked at the .bin from it) to use as a tool to learn more about tuning/flashing.

I went ahead and pulled the .bin file from my GIAC X ECU with NefMoto (.bin file had the typical 1 checksum error that GIAC files tend to have), opened the .bin file in TunerPro (with the latest MBox XDF), and proceeded to code out the EGTs and rear O2s. I saved the file as a new .bin file, ran it through ME7Checker (had 5 errors), and corrected errors with me7sum (I rechecked with ME7Checker to verify that errors had been corrected). I then installed the "stock" ECU, pulled its .bin file for safekeeping, and then flashed it with the modded GIAC .bin. Flash was successful, however, the car wouldn't start. I also tried flashing the unmodified GIAC .bin file with the same result.

I'd love to use my GIAC X tune if I could get the above coding done and any advice or input would be appreciated. In the meantime I'm currently trying out a version of NVR's Stage II++ file that has been modified by another member for 91 octane (which I successfully converted from Bosch MAF to Hitachi MAF).

Sounds like you might need to copy over the EEPROM from the GIAC ECU as well.  I know some manufacturers store some license/security/copyright protection stuff in the EEPROM.

Makes sense. I'll give that a try and will report back. Thank you!

Reporting back... It worked!

Using ArgDub's tool (ME7_95040.exe) I was able to pull the EEPROM via OBD on both ECUs (GIAC X and stock MBox). Last night I finished making a bench harness and was able to flash the EEPROM from the GIAC X ECU to the stock MBox ECU in boot mode (again using ArgDub's tool). I then flashed the GIAC .bin I had modified (coded out rear o2s and EGTs) and checksum corrected. Car started right up and was has continued to start through several key/drive cycles... now I need to log.

Big thank you to oldcarguy85 for the suggestion and ArgDub for the EEPROM flashing tool!

You might have to flash the giac eeprom back at some point..

Hey guys I have a question maybe you could help me with please.. I'm tinkering with a 2003 tt roadster 1.8t ecu and I have pulled the bin fixed checksums...Then reflashed the ecu with the possible giac tune unidentified but defiantly tuned by a company ...In the same adjustments I removed The immo 3 to off and darn thing wont run my car you guys wouldn't happen to know Is this off ing the immo would mess up the license to cause me the no start issue ? Im not removing to change the file to another box just so Im clear same file same eeprom just adjusted a hair...Im not into taking someone's hard work like that ..I just cant get any info of what tune is in the ecu so I have no idea whats on the box just that its been tuned by a company that does giac tunes thats all I could dig up after tinkering with it and flashing it.. I called the company with a vin nothing....So I pulled the file to inspect it little closer and I cant dig up anything with it I pulled it up in winols freeware and its defiantly protected so I'm at a lose here and no way to make sure the hardware in the car is correct for the flash either... no idea if I just wasted the file pulling and flashing just to make sure its right...The car is wasted no start so its been down for sometime and jump started a whole lot so no idea if its just my procedures and or it was wasted to begin with any thoughts would be greatly appreciated I cant post the file or the eeprom as thats not right so maybe a smidge of input would be greatly appreciated..Its not my car or ecu so thats why im not trying to change boxes thats all I mean by that...Just a friends car Repair to running for a few dollars...Not a tune or ecu I personally paid for. The car Runs with my passat b5 ecu that I personally adjusted just to skip allot of steps and the key is possibly damaged. Is my determination or the Ecu is faulty but seems to be functional on diagnostics k line...I will be trying a diffrent crossflash file later but to test it in my car isnt really possible I have to many fueling mods injectors and fpr upgrades ive tinkered with in my car so ekkk ooopsss makes it kinda hard to test my work on a running car....

I'm thinking about it the best test would be just to tune the tt box with my current tune from my b5 and plug it in see if it runs..That would tell me if the box is 100 percent functional hrmm well Ill try that since immo is offed all ready..All my rambling and I figured out how to skip up a few steps!!!And maybe replace all files with originals and try and pair a new key to the ecu maybe good a new task at hand ...Never done this so time to learn!

tested box with my file ok yea the ecu box is good the tuned file with a original adjusted immo3 file definitely shuts the running ability down ....Now I will have to try and do key adding or cloning some how.

so, this tt tune i was tinkering with is defiantly Giac tuned but damn thing won't start with it all original flashed hrmm .... I have the immo file and ecu bin and guage cluster pulls.. I figured it out by opening in hex editor found their markings left plainly says giac lol...but no idea why it wont run ....hrmm any Idea where to start on this darn thing.... fuel pump wont kick! I would hate to throw this ecu away like that to put stock on it....if maybe anyone had any ideas I would really appreciate it so much....
