First post so hello to all...

As above I have just starting out learning how to chip / remap cars, more of a hobby at the moment but hope to maybe do professionally at some stage. I drive an Audi S4 (B5) which is still pretty standard at the moment. I'm aware of products and discs out there with 100's of tune files on them ready to download to any car, well aware of the issues with these files I intend to steer well clear and would like to start at the beginning and try to learn and understand as much as possible about the tools and processes involved in tuning cars.

I’ve a good understanding of car mechanics and have also had experience in software development (C  mainly (NI CVI) with some VB)

So just starting out I'm really needing some advice on the best software and Comms tools for my car, and any other advice for a beginner.

Once you have absorbed that feel free ask for some more specifics.

Try not to get too discouraged, getting into tuning European cars is a test of patience.

I have just ordered the interface and am now ploughing through the information I downloaded from this site and S4wiki.

Will have plenty questions to come no doubt....

I just wanted to say I'm in the same boat as well and am just snooping around soaking up knowledge.  Trying to get my S4 up to tip-top shape before I start playing with it, but I do have a KWP2000+ and Galetto cable to play with however.  Thanks for starting the forum and sharing all the info you find BTW.

Just let me know if you need any specific info, and I will post up some answers.

I don't have time to post all of the info I know, because I have to finish setting up the website, finish my tuning software package, work 9-6 at my real job, and keep my wife happy. So if you can ask me specific questions, I should be able to answer those.

I am trying to spend the bulk of my time writing tuning software, and spending as little time as possible with improving the website.

So it would be great if people could let me know what they would like to see on the website, forum, tutorials, FAQs, etc, so that I can provide what everyone wants, without spending time on things people don't want. It would be great if people could create some place holder FAQs or tutorials for things they wanted explained, and then I could always come along and fill in the blanks.

Once I release my free basic flashing software, I hope that people can become more focused on tuning, and less on how to tune.

Well I wasn't expecting you to provide all the info.  I'm sure some of the things listed below in no particular order would be useful however.  From past experience it's usually easier to tune 1 aspect at a time whenever possible.  I would have added placeholder threads, but wasn't sure if you wanted to start a How-To section or if those would go in a sticky under the Tuning section.

1. How to adjust boost.
2. How to adjust rev limit (2-step, NLTS if possible).
3. How to adjust for larger injectors or higher base fuel pressure.
4. How to adjust WOT fueling.
5. How to adjust part-throttle fueling.
6. How to make timing adjustments.
7. How to eliminate all emissions tests, but still pass OBDII tests.

First beginner Question..

Following the information I was directed to on S4 wiki, I now have the KWP 2000 interface and software...

I have successfully downloaded to ecu Bin from my car and am now attempting to read it using Tuner pro.. However the xdf file provided on s4 wiki does not work with my file. The file provided is for M-box and from what I can work out mine should be C-box. The M-Box XDF file was created from a G-Box OLS file. All of the memory addresses will be different in your C-box from the M-box.

This is where you will have to start tracking down the memory locations of different maps. What you can do is compare a stock M-box bin to a stock C-box bin in a hex editor that supports comparing two files. Then you should be able to find where the different maps have been moved to. I like using HexWorkshop to do this.

A quick query though..

I have now managed to track down a number of maps from my ecu bin using hex editor and also using winols, but it appears the main boost related maps I've been looking for are quite different to the stock m-box bin i've been comparing them with....

After some more looking around I now believe My ecu to be D-box not C... but this has caused me a little confusion. I downloaded the Audi S4 2.7T 250HP 8D0907551D 0261206382 350243 from your stock ecu files section and after a quick compare found the file to be identical to my ecu bin..  Is this file correct for the 250bhp model?

My car is a European RHD 265bhp facelift model.. I can confirm the power of my car to be 265ish as I have before and after RR read outs after I fitted a performance exhaust and air filter a while ago, I'm now running 280bhp...

Any thoughts???

also do you have any info in the main differences between M C D box ecu's??

Sorry John, I am not very familiar with the European model numbers. I know in North America there was a large change in 2000 to 2001 going from the A to the M, which included changing the type of MAF in the car. From 2001.5 to 2002 there was a minor change going from the M to the T.

The S4Wiki includes some info on which years had which model numbers. But I would recommend connecting VAG-COM to your car, and when it connects it will tell you the part number the ECU thinks it is.

A bit off topic, but is there a resource of xdf files anywhere that would include a majority of engines/ecus?  Sorry for the noob question..

ECU definitions files are generally not shared freely. Most people want to trade or sell them, so there isn't any list of publicly available files.
