IIRC it is only there to assist automatic map/axis detection... it has no effect on editing etc.

WinOLS should not alter the size of an already defined map, afaik.

Most lookups do use the byte/word before the axis for the length, but I have never seen the byte that identifies what the data represents used for anything.

But the Signature byte I'm referring ins't the same thing as the axis size byte/word right in front of the axis. It is a property field in the map properties box. I'll post a screenshot example when I get back
 in front my computer.
