any chance of this happening anytime soon? would be nice to have a central thread somewhat simplified (as much as possible) for us med9 noobs!

MED9 is no different (with a couple exceptions) than ME7.
95% of it still applies. If you can tune ME7 well then you will have no issues with MED9.

The biggest difference is the direct injection system and associated things.
The rest is pretty much the same.

MED17 is where things get complicated, not MED9.

couldn't the same argument be made as to why there is separate 1.8t and 2.7t community threads? if they're the same why have 2 threads?

I have no idea why you have two threads for 2.7TT and 1.8T because the ECU's are exactly the same apart from the wideband...
If you know how to tune one you know how to tune the other.

The MED9 is much more valid in that there are specific FSI related questions that do not apply to ME7...

But a stage 1 tune for MED9 vs ME7 is really not different, maybe 4-5 maps that you change are for different things... rest is really the same idea.

I also recommend learning on ME7 because:
a) You have a real time emulator option for ME7
b) Even if you don't have a real time emulator, flashing does NOT take 15 minutes or something
c) You have ME7Logger for ME7

So once you know ME7 well, you can move to MED9 and you will get the basics right already, and only have to deal with the direct injection stuff. Rest will be natural to you.
