I am in a similar boat with a 2.0T in a 2008 Wolfsburg Jetta.

I have scoured the internet and downloaded lots of things, but haven't had time to really parse any of it.  It looks like the MPPS clones do have trouble in some cases - however the ones manufactured in europe instead of china seem to have less reliability issues.

They also reportedly checksum.

Leaving us to build an XDF.

MPPS works fine in the car, BDM is best for bench writing.

Does anyone know a source of a good MPPS clone? I am not a fan of the "direct from china" sites. Are there any affordable BDM tools?

IMHO it's better to start experiments with MED9 ECU using BDM.
First step make a "photocopy" of original ECU content (Flash/EEPROM/CPU)
Than you can always and anytime 100% recover your ECU to virgin state after any unsuccessfully test und never lost it as "brick".
BDM-100 clones "made in China" are good reliable and affordable.

I bought for experiments visual exactly the same box. It works.
IMHO this box (maybe this concern only my version of box) has one issue.
It have relay inside witch is switched directly from USB supply current.
This may cause аn overcurrent problem for some notebook USB-ports.

I am not sure.  I was trying to get better pics of the small "adapter PCB's" they include in the kit.  I may have found a source in the US for the BDM100 clone - if it is the latest version I'll post up the info.

To deal with MED9.x or any other types ECUs manufactured by Bosch you don't need any of adapter PCB's.
Adapters are using for ECUs made by another manufacturers (Siemens, Marelli, Motorola)
Spring-loaded pins adapter will be useful for Bosch ECUs to connect BDM without soldering.
