If I were to purchase a used ECU with say, an APR tune, what would be needed to get it working on my car? Vin rewrite? Immo off?

It would be an ME7.5, specifically 8E0909518AK.

I just started entertaining that idea, but before I start looking for one, I thought I'd ask what needs to be done if I do find one. I just want a little more power without having to spend $600 to buy an APR tune from a dealer.

it'd just need to be immo defeated, assuming you have a car that is compatible with that ecu.

I did see that thread and thought about using the file but I would need to run 91 and I'm not confident in my ability to tune the fuel/ignition maps to fit the lower octane.

Now I'm tempted to try the file.  As it stands now, is that tune good enough for everyday driving until I am able to learn and play around with maps?

You'll be fine. Listen for audible knock. Do some logging to make sure CF's aren't insane.
