The versions 1.8.0.0 and newer of the NefMoto software currently have three features that are locked out until you purchase a premium license. The three features are fast flash writing, fast flash reading, and DTC info decoding. If you are able to perform the normal full flash write, full flash read, and DTC operations successfully on your ECU, then the premium versions will also work. The fast flash writing and fast flash reading operations work the same way as the regular free versions.

The fast flash writing premium feature allows flashing only the memory sectors that have changed instead of all memory sectors. Fast writing programs the flash memory in about 1 minute compared to about 4 minutes for writing all memory sectors.

The fast flash reading premium feature is able to read the ECU flash memory faster by reading only sectors that are not blank. Fast reading is able to read an ECU in about 2 minutes compared to about 4 minutes or reading all memory sectors. There will be a small update coming shortly that will allow the fast flash operation to only read memory sectors that are different from a reference. This should allow the flash to be read about 1 minute when using a reference file that is similar.

The DTC info decoding premium feature will show you the description of the DTC, in addition to the numeric code that the non-premium DTC reading shows. DTCs are "Device Trouble Codes" also known as "Error Codes" or "Fault Codes". Future versions will also convert the DTC status field to a human readable description.

The premium feature license for fast flash writing, fast flash reading, and decoding of DTC info is $50 US.

The license gets tied to the hardware ID inside your FTDI USB cable. If you ever lose the cable, you lose the license. There is no way of offering refunds for licenses, because once the license is created there is no way to take it back. If your cable stops working, you can send me the cable for destruction, and IF I can verify that the cable sent to me is the licensed cable, I will ATTEMPT to issue a replacement license.

To create a license file for you, I need the information from your cable. First, plug in your FTDI USB cable and run the NefMoto software. Then under the “Licensing” menu click on “Check if FTDI Devices Support Licensing”. If your cable supports licensing, then under the "Licensing" menu, click on "Save Device Info to File". This will save all of the info about the FTDI USB cable to a new file. Email the USB cable info file to sales@nefariousmotorsports.com along with any comments, questions, etc. A PayPal invoice will be sent back to your email address. Once the PayPal invoice has been paid, a license file will be emailed to you.

To import a license, go to the "Licenses" menu, and then click the "Import a License File" option. Then select your license file. Fast reading, fast writing, and DTC decoding should now all work as long as you have the licensed USB cable plugged in. If your licensed USB cable is not plugged in, then the premium features will remain disabled. For the premium features to be enabled, your cable must be listed in the “FTDI Devices” drop down menu in the NefMoto software.

Strangely enough, my generic cable which works perfectly does not seem to support premium features according to the software.

Is this a bug, am I missing something, or am I SOL?

So I installed the newest Nefmoto... and then went to check if my cable supported licensing, and the software says no.. but if I hover over the usb cable selection box, it says it does...

Also if it does happen to be that my cable really isn't supported, are the ones listed in the software thread 100% supported?

My cable "looks" exactly like the ones pictured in that thread. I am going to hold out and say this is a software bug...

I sent Tony an email, but I guess he is busy right now.

If no serial number is showing, I would bet it's either a driver issue, or the software is generating a false positive on cable compatibility.  The license is based on the ftdi chip's unique serial number - if that's not enumerating, then it has no way to be licensed.

The tool tip that says your cable supports licensing is a bug. I renamed one of the properties in the FTDI Device object and forgot to update the data binding in the user interface. If you run "Check if my cable supports licensing" and it says no, then it doesn't. The NefMoto licenses are based on the FTDI ChipID which is unique to every FTDI device. The problem is that the cheaper OBD cables are using the cheapest FTDI devices you can get which don't support FTDI ChipIDs.

I think you need to read this thread Recommended USB KKL OBD Cables

That thread has the best info for choosing a cable. Many of the cables look the same but are completely different inside. I have personally bought and tested about 5 different cables. Even the sellers of these cables don't know what FTDI chip is inside. I found no way to tell what FTDI chip you are getting inside the cable before you order them. The two sellers I list in the recommended thread I found are selling cables with the FTDI 232R chip, which has more options and supports FTDI Chip ID.

Sorry if this was mentioned somewhere else, but should a genuine VCDS (vag-com) cable allow licensing?

Genuine VAG-COM cables are recommended and will work with licensing. I don't recommend the Ross-Tech KII cables though because they don't support proper dumb mode pass through.

Thanks, Tony....Something I saw on the VCDS site that made me wonder..."Notes:

This interface requires a special driver to be installed on your PC.  It does not emulate a COM port.   That means this interface will not work with any other software besides VCDS."

I have the hex-can-usb.

I own a HEX-CAN-USB myself and use it for testing at home with the NefMoto software. The NefMoto software uses the FTDI SDK to communicate directly with the USB chip and does not require COM ports.
