Hi everyone,

I have no experience with this ECU at all, and I am not trying to tune it, but when choosing between a Mk6 GTI and a Mk5, I went for the Mk5, because I read somewhere something about TPROT on a Mk6 GTI, so I was like "nope".

My friend recently got a Mk6 GTI (from Japan) and went in for a remap. I warned him about TPROT and whatnot, and also because I know the tuners here are basically file loaders.

According to him, they flashed his car to 'Stage 2' via OBD (using KESS) no need to read via BDM no nothing, nothing about TPROT and all.

So I just wanted to ask, if in your experience, is OBD flashing a Mk6 GTI possible without the use of BDM to remove tprot?

Absolutely. There is an exploit which allows a custom SBOOT by bypassing the sigcheck in the hardware bootloader, at which point full hardware access is available and the firmware can be patched to remove sigcheck and enable full r/w. prj posts about it here: http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=17566.msg134810#msg134810 . almost all available commercial tools offer this now.
