After completing a flash, if you can connect with VCDS or any other diagnostic software, chances are the flash was successful. Scan for codes, anything that doesn't reference programming not finished, or checksum error isn't a big deal.

Hi all,

You were correct - bad *bin seems to have been the root cause.
The check to see whether NefMoto can connect already in the bench saves a lot of time.
Original bin worked fine, now I'm even back to my tune and it's still working.
Fantastic!
I look forward to see if the ECU tolerates the higher boost now...

-now that your immediate issues are resolved, please take the time to read through some of the stickies of the forum, they will help immensely to sharpen up the details of the hardware, software, tuning.
