Car came with Passat ECU 3B0 907 551 AN hardware.
Scanned as 8D0 907 551 M (what looks like a Nefmoto downloaded tune, aggressive stage 2).
I flashed a more conservative file (and EGR, SAI, EVAP, rear O2 deletes).
Car started, drove over several days.

Yesterday, car cranked but did NOT start. After lot of checking/trying (crank sensor, fuel, spark, etc) found:
16985 - Internal Control Module
            P0601 - 35-00 - Memory Check Sum Error

a) can hardware cause the check sum error or is that only tune related?
b) can the hardware be used for Me7.1 applications (2.7T, APB; 2000-2002 S4, A6, Allroad)?

Your bin has incorrect checksum.
Search for "death code" to fix this. And checksum the file properly before writing.

If not, why not?

Also that ECU is for a 2.8

I have tested a 2.8 ecu in 2.7TT but there is no N75 controller hardware in it.
Its "works" but not very well.

As stated, its a Passat 2.8 ECU. Came with the car, installed was a (assume Nefmoto download) agressive stage 2 file.
Car ran, no terribly noticeable runability issues. The tune scans as an S4 (8D0xxx551M" tune.

Only want to know if Check Sum error is tune or hardware related, and in the same context if Passat 2.8 V6 ECU should be used AT ALL for 2.7T.

Did you run the image through ME7Sum? If not, why not, considering that would answer your question

You think the lack of N75 drivers isn't an issue (if, what he says is true)?

I'd think it would be immediately obvious from a log.

The ecu was flashed by an (real) mpps cable which was checksumed prior to flash.

I've seen files flashed with MPPS that did not have a proper RSA signature... pull the file and please post the output.

I have flashed a Passat 2.8 1024byte  ecu with allroad software before. No issues or codes maybe 512k ecu hardware is different.

You won't have any codes. But like nyet said.
It's very easy to see the problem in a log.
