Is this one of those instances where he would need to either use a virgin eeprom bin for immo or desolder eeprom and restore on the bench?

Dead cluster makes me think a desolder may be in order here.

i still do not understand how the key learning process "killed" your dash. makes no sense at all.

I already watched that video.
a little detail concerning the Touareg:
When you put a new key (virgin) you cannot turn on the dash lights. I mean in the ignition position the dash stays dead.
In the video you can go to ignition with a virgin or unauthorized key.
here is the rosstech wiki about the how to add a new key. I found out later but this procedure didn't work. It only woke up the central locking module.

The car is now working fine. It was towed to a shop and the guy reprogrammed the old and the new key.
But I'm trying to understand. I'm even ready to retry the procedure just to see what's gonna happen. But this time I want to have the tools and the backup files to do the job myself.

I'm not familiar with the security issues involved in publishing my car info on the internet. If there are no security issues in making my ecu file public I will upload it.
I used vag commander with a dumb usb cable. I had some trouble making it connect and I found out today that it was not working correctly because it has the ch340 chip. I managed to backup the ecu anyway and got the skc out of it. I did sent it to the guy but he said that it was not enough. I will get more info on what he did later.

I had these faults before doing the key matching.
I erased them because I changed the battery lately and I thought they were related to low voltage.

3 Faults Found:
01299 - Diagnostic Interface for Data Bus (J533)
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - Intermittent
01341 - Control Module in Instrument Panel On Comfort CAN (J285)
            004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent
01176 - Key
            008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent

but the car was running fine.

So maybe the dash module was faulty.

I got that but I was confused as you say the dash is still dead, or was after the shop corrected it.

No everything is working, dash and all.
The guy who brought the car back to life said he had to flash 4 components: ecu, dash, kessy and something else I don't remember all using the odb port !!!

By the way I have another issue but it is not related to the key programming failure. The cluster gauges do not light up. the only thing which lights up is the lcd screen. I think the cluster backlight died but this happened a few weeks before the key programming.
I will have to open the cluster and take a look at the backlight.

Immo is NOT in dash!

Totally forget dash in 7L for immo. You can read pin via OBD only from engine ecu, or you read the 93C86 eeprom from kessy with programmer. There is also a free online-decoder for kessy http://www.canblocker.com/

The guy did it all with odb port while I could not connect to the odb port with both a vcds cable and a ch340 cable. I know the ch340 is crap now. So the question is: is he telling the truth or did he have to do bench flashing. he said he didn't remove anything. Did he flash stuff or did he just put back the ecu bin file I backuped?  I mean whet do you guys think about waking it all though odb port only?
So you're saying that immo 3 for Touareg is kessy and ecu only?
Do you need to remove the kessy to get backup the content?
I'm getting FT232R chip cable soon. is it enough with the nefmoto tools available here to backup and restore, kill, brick and then bring it back to life :-)

There is another thread on another board regarding a 2008 touareg key learning and he had to precode the key OR buy a precoded key from vag.

This might be the case with your 2004 car too?!

The guy talked about preparing the key. This is ok for the new key but why the original key didn't work I don't know.

Going on with my learning :-)

My Ecu is: 022906032BE:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/DD-185-VW-TOUREG-Control-Unit-ECU-022906032BE-0261207565/162903686134?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

My Kessy is:  3D0909135J
https://www.ebay.com/itm/PORSCHE-CAYENNE-Central-Locking-Keyless-Entry-Module-3D0909135J/272913619004?epid=652767687&hash=item3f8aeb583c:g:r3sAAOSwZlZZ~HJ5

I want to have a copy of these boys ready for swapping in case of failure or error.
What do I need (please amend or correct):

1. A FT232RL cable ( I prefer this instead of fiddling with the vcds cable)
2. NefMoto programmer

What about cloning the kessy module? What tools to use.

I found this intersting device. It looks like this would have saved me the trouble of towing the car since it can switch on the car to ignition !!! Do I understand it right?
