Is is possible to change the octane rating a tune looks for?

I purchased a second hand tuned ecu that I was told was setup for 91/93, but after some complications (car dying with the tuned ecu) I do not think this is the case. Sadly where I live I only have access to 91 octane not 93. I tried to google the subject a little bit, but found no helpful information.


Any input is greatly appreciated!

P.S. this is for my AWP 1.8t mk4 gti

 

91 on a tune designed for 93? I was told by multiple tuners to not to mix octane ratings if I can help it for the safety of my engine.

OEM knock recognition will work down to 87 oct, unless the tuner numbed it intentionally. You won't make as much power as a tune made specifically for 91, but it should be more or less safe.

If you do not know what your tuner did, you have a few choices:

1) don't worry about it
2) ask your tuner to fix it
3) revert to stock
4) DIY your own tune based on stock

Do not modify tuner files.
