I realize this is an old post, but perhaps someone knows what book exactly was referenced in this post?

 
You need more than 10maps to calibrate them correctly. No black smoke, no cold start issues!
If you know the MED9 logic and the DI model and if you have read the blue Bosch book about DI engines then you are ready to calibrate them correctly.

It is not always right to try finding maps but you miss the theory!

The Automotive Handbook doesn't have any details . it's all about high level explanations.
If you are talking about diesel remap (I think so due to the smoke mention) I would bet the reference is to "Diesel-Engine Management" book.
