Can anyone tell me what this custom chip is i found in my pals ECU? It was chipped by some company dirt cheap but doesn't run proper so i told him ill have a look. Probably going for a stock flash to see how it'll run.

Any help would be appreciated

Attach file doesn't seem to work, so I've uploaded it here if anyone would be kind enough to check it out

It´s a copy protection pcb. You need to desolder it and install flash with ori data in ecu direct again. Or just buy another ecu, maybe easier if you do not have soldering equipment...

Wow! Thanks alot for the quick response, that explains. I don't understand why in the world they'd do that to protect a shitty tune which  increases HP from 180 to 199. Honestly a stock 1.8t runs better than this crapware.

So there is no way to read or flash this without desoldering the stupid chip?

You can read it in bootmode. Should be able to get eeprom and rom off it. Buy your new ECU or have fun soldering that chip to the board.

Then with your new ECU just flash eeprom and rom. then work from there.

So i can read it well thats interesting tbh. Though i'm not very interested in keeping that file i am interested to see what changes were made, so i guess ill do that. But as you say i can read it in bootmode doesn't that also mean i can write a stock file to it? And basically ignore the chip OBD flashing would be nice but needing to benchflash doesn't bother me.

I see yes it does look similar!

Ill tell my friend he probably got ripped off then.. i'm not bothering with things i don't know much about. I'd rather not brick it either by trying to flash or read, since i probably can't recover it anyhow without soldering.

The part i don't understand; he told me this was done very recently, why would a cheap ass company protect a shitty tune with an even worse chip basically rendering the ECU useless for any other tuner. Probably should try to get his money back honestly...

I've seen local tuner pullout me7 ecu from the customers car and flash it with bootmode with the kess bench tools few years ago
They spent a hours on a something like k04 tt225 bolton stuff
A lot of work, drama everywhere, costs skyhigh and the customer was impressed that professional level and space technology
In fact most of the folks here could do the same in 15 mins with no fucks given
But in the customers pow those companys are professionals and obviously you cannot do the same quality tune just sitting on a passenger seat wo all those kess needles stuff
So just a psychology

You know how everybody wants LC and MAFless and "how do i protect my tune from theft"?

Ever wonder what that demographic is all about?

Good one @fukenbroken with the right knowledge and tools anyone could probably flash these ECUs tbh, but very little people seem to bother.

I read something about "tune theft" but isn't this technically impossible, because if anything its theft from Bosch as far as i'm aware.

But this brings me to another point, isn't something like this illegal to do? They have basically ruined a good working ECU with custom hardware which is not required for it to run and also without telling the customer.

I wonder what'd happen if he'd bring his car to another tuning shop tbh.

Its an 25yrs old ecus st1-2 for those are super basic even for a beginner

as i said earlier its not about tune protecting, hw works is a reason to made an overpriced tune
srsly they should be absolutely insane by soldering this lil bastard in 2020 for a protecting reasons

another option - they have those giac ecu for a years and just swaped it with your friends one to get a stock pcb wo that shit but again .. those ecus costs a few bucks.. yay

Certainly, i am definitely still a beginner but i can make something work. I try to learn as much as i can.

I think it is very likely they screwed him over with an old ECU they had laying around. It's still an absolute joke and I'll tell anyone i can not to go to that specific company. Absolutely terrible. And I'll tell him whats wrong and to demand his money back.

This is very likely. I doubt the riser is their doing. It is probably APR EMCS and they just loaded some 20 year old file.

Depends what he paid, what company did it, what power was raised to, etc.  Tunes are subjective, people can do good and bad ones.  Some people have bad times, some don't.

Just throw the ECU on eBay, take a picture of the riser, let people know it's tuned and get rid of it.  Get a stock ECU and tune it for him.

He paid 225 euro for the """remap""" and around 125 for a dyno run. I'll tell him first to atleast try at the tuning company to see if they're willing to cooperate on either giving him a stock ECU or his money back.

Otherwise selling seems the most viable option, and either going stock ECU or me having a go at a remap.
