Author Topic: Trying to understand what happened here (VCDS Scan)  (Read 6891 times)

So new here and still learning and looking through all the topics getting a headache.

Quick backstory. Friend bought car, bought Eurodyne tune and cable, flashing failed, he couldn't fix it. Part of what he tried to was sent out the ECU to a company to have it repaired (spent $275). Told me he asked them to "flash it back to stock"

When I bought the car from him, I hooked up my VCDS and tried reading the ECU, sometimes couldn't communicate but would occasionally get some response. Below is what came back.

You've probably just bricked the ECU. You can easily get it back to working order using boot-mode.

Use a bdm tool and full backup from another ecu and restore it.

KTag+Kess ordered, already have VCDS with Hex-V2 cable, and an old blue eBay cable. So once that comes in I should have everything physically I need to get this done. Time to read up and get my game plan. Goal, running next Saturday.

Just want to say this forum has been great so far with the help and hopefully I can figure out more of the process without too many more noob questions, or at least semi-less noob questions.

bottom line, you should not do any flashing until you have a known good bootmode setup working.

Is the car a manual or auto? Ill provide a full backup you can write with ktag. Dont try port flashing with china kess youll brick the ecu

Ok Ill upload that soon. Disregard my comment on the china kess thats only an issue with tsi. Fsi works fine, matter of fact you cant brick it threw port with kess. even if you unplug it and key off you can reconnect and write

Got a china kess, I did connect it to the junkyard ecu and did a read of it. Also picked up a chinese ktag to mess around with the original bricked ecu. I have been reading threads as my time permits and I'm finding a lot of threads and tools for the ME7 and less on the MED9.1 ECUs.

Theoretically though I should be able to immo off the read I did with the kess and write it back to the ECU to get the car running correct?

good luck with MED.

there is only one reason there is so much public information available for ME7.1 and not much else

nobody wants to talk about it though.

Well immo off isn’t absolutely needed. With what I have I see a few options from what little I’ve learned.

1. Immo off the used ECU
2. Unbrick the original ECU
3. Get used ECU pin and original ECU/cluster pin and use VCDS to adapt them.

I just really want to get it running for now and not deal with towing to a dealership. I figure any way I make it work I’ll end up with a spare ECU and some tools to be able to mess around with tuning down the road.

Here, write this with k tag and you'll have a car again. BTW immo off is done with eeprom in med9.1. Or at least it's the most known way how. Their is more then one part in the ecu that contains data, the eeprom in this ecu is a 95160 that has variant coding, immo and vin. Also, the flash that has the calibration portion. So in other words you won't be able to immo off with a kess read. Also you won't be able to flash the ecu without immo off or without immo paired unless flashed by bdm (ktag).

Can’t BDM read or write either ECU. Too many variables come up when searching what might be wrong, not going to nickel and dime this to death, buying more and more things that might or might not work.
