Hello,

I wanted to learn something by creating an arduino device with the MCP2515 CAN module so i can sniff the CAN network traffic and have a look at the network, analyse the frames and have some fun with it.

Unfortunately it seems like my TT from 2000 has K Line, no CAN, and the issue for me is to understand the differences between them.

I know K Line is primitive compared to CAN network, but how does the devices in car with K line communicates with each other?

I am aware i am asking stupid questions, but i just started to digging this topic so i would much appreciate any your output as it will be very helpful for me.

Thanks.

You are indeed asking a question, that can be easily answered with some minor research Wink

K-Line is only used for diagnostic communication.
All the control modules on the PTCAN still use CAN for communication of course.

So while you will not be able to call any diagnostic services or request data from ECU, if you just want to see what is happening on the bus and read the data that is already there you can certainly tap the PTCAN and sniff it.
The format of the ECU messages is defined in the FR and it is possible to turn them on or off.

Hello,

Thank you for your help friend.

I have found some misleading informations on other forum that said only TT starting from 2002 has CAN, but now i know that every TT has can and they only provided the entertainment CAN (for navigation/radio) for the units starting from 2002.

I have also found similar topics by looking for "ptcan", so now i got starting point.

Thank you again!!

Older TT's just dont have powertrain canbus directly to the cluster.
Just grab it near ecu/abs, and sniff it.
