Hi everyone,

I have an AGU Golf GTI 1.8T DBC running a ME3.8.3 06A906018CH ECU (original vw Ecu)

I then purchased a Custom Code Stage 1 Tune on a ME3.8.3 06A906018AQ ECU (Audi Ecu) and installed it into my car. 

Works well, but i lost my cruise control in the process.  Cruise control is activated in the ECU, but for some reason doesnt work with the audi ecu in my car.

I have access to a lot of electronics epuipment that can float chips, read chips.... but I dont want to start stuffing around with my ecus unless i can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Originally i wanted to just float the custom code chip off the Audi ecu and and resolder it to the VW ecu. This seems pretty achievable and i would get my cruise control back.

But I got thinking more about it...

Do tuned ecu's come with some kind of DRM that would prevent me from reading the chip?

Is it possible to read the contents of the custom code chip after its been floated, save that information and then either....
- bench flash my original ecu with the information i gathered from the custom code ecu?
- Clone the information to a new chip?

Hi,

I know what the problem is. It's a wrong based tune. I can sort this for your and give you some tips about flashing your ecu.

The current shown items will not fit and will not give you motronic m3.8.3 flashability.

In the meanwhile I have found some further information that no doubt needs clarifying.

The ECU

What part of the ECU holds all the engine management information? Is it one main EPROM on the ecu circuit board?

I understand that a DAMOS file is the data contents that is stored in the EPROM on the ECU.  People modify this file with a program such as WinOLS, re-burn the new EPROM information to a new chip and insert it back onto the ECU. What does the DAMOS acronym stand for? 

Does the M3.8.3 have a EPROM or a EEPROM?  I understand that a EPROM can be flashed only once., while an EEPROM can be reflashed many times.  Is there a limit to how many times a EEPROM can be reflashed?

What I don't understand is why some companies like APR, GIAC desolder and resolder their custom chip, while other companies like Custom Code are able to bench flash their ECU's lately.  Is this because APR and GIAC chips are specially made with DRM in place?

That is enough basic questions from me today, ill see if I can PM you now.

Let's answer some basic questions :

"What part of the ECU holds all the engine management information?" -> Your M3.8.3 ecu holds it in a flashrom. A AMD AM29F200BB to be specific.

"I understand that a DAMOS file is the data contents that is stored in the EPROM on the ECU" -> heh not really. It's a hard searched for definition-
file the calibrators from v.a.g. use to know what sits where in the software that a ecu manufacturer made. This definition is very handy to know
what maps and constants are in the software and where they exactly sit as of adress.

"What does the DAMOS acronym stand for?" -> time for peeps that know this to chime-in. I get the feeling this is a very specific technical german acronym.

"Does the M3.8.3 have a EPROM or a EEPROM?" -> It has a flashrom and a small serial eeprom to store some special values.

M3.8.3 and not talk about earlier generations of ecu's that hold these proms or eeproms.

Some of them use special encryptionboards as a inbetween translation-thing. This special equipment is used to keep away youngsters from robbing their R&D investment in a blink of an eye.
DRM -> me thinks thats for computer-content. Not for car content. Anti-theft-measurements, i would call these encyptionboards.  Some companies use newer strategies to prevent the
stealing of their work/r&d). They use a (sometimes) patented system to lock the immobiliser with the clock+ecu. Nifty trick. But not 100% secure.
