I use a galleto for read and write
Galleto can read locked files but do not read locked OBD.
You could read it on the bench

Yes, boot mode read and write should work.

that depends on what's in the image.

Not true, what is on the image will only protect OBD.

Its the hardware that protects from boot mode. If it is a straight forward memory chip then boot mode will read it. If it is a module with its own processor (read APR) then boot mode will not read it.

The irony of this is APR's files can be read through OBD.

they can be read through obd but i have never found a way to edit them. and that is not true about the encryption modules. the cpu sees the descrambled correct data when needed, so why would that data also not be able to be dumped during boot mode?
for example, gaic encryption ecu: read through bootmode, dumps ok!, resolder psop44 with no encryption board, reflash ecu in boot mode with dumped file. ecu works ok!

I didn't say encryption module....

APR's module  comprises of a non usual memory (to the ECU) type and a processor. it is not just an encryption module.

I am well aware that boot mode will read through a normal encryption module.

apr data will still read out the same. the cpu sees the correct, for the lack of a better term, stock code no matter what. the instructions still have to be the same for the car to run.
i have a file read from an apr board. let me dig and find it.
also, theyre board uses an xilink cpu. its probably there just to make updating the fw easier since it has onboard jtag. but who knows why they really did what they did. i do give them credit though for their security.
