yesterday i threw together a bench harness for me3/5 ecus.
tested with mpps and it works great. mpps detects ecu and flashes ecu ok.

try to log in to ecu with vcds. vcds says "too many communication errors to continue."
why is this?

Do you mean M3/5? Did you test to see if VAG COM connected before you flashed? Sounds like programming is not complete.

yes, 3/5.
heres what happened:
i received ecu. desoldered eeprom and 200bb flash. immo'd off the eeprom and flashed 200bb with a tuned file i already had. used my gq3x programmer for both chips.
this was not the first ecu ive done like is so i know the files are good.
sent ecu back, person says ecu wont start their car and it has a list of codes. programming not complete was one of them actually i believe. vagcom was able to check codes with the ecu in the car.
i received ecu back. made bench harness, flashed tuned file with mpps. thats when i got the vcds comm error problem.
reflashed stock file, same comm error.
reflashed tuned file, comm errors again.

in reality, im really just the middle man between the "tuner" and the customer. im the one behind the scenes doing all the work that gets caught in the middle when theres a problem. so honestly have no idea if the ecu worked before i got, if its a dead junk yard ecu, or what the real deal with the ecu is and was. what i wrote above is all i know.

Does the main flash number ie 06A 906 XXX match that of the original box/eeprom?

Hi k0mpresd,

ifso..  why desolder ?  3mins and you're done....   

What i always do with these : first see if we have normal comms with vagcom. Ifso : reprogram flashrom via mpps. Ifnot : call customer.

Do you have a original read-out of this flash b.t.w. (018ES) ? I'm looking for it.

I get the feeling you might have a wrong readout on the immo-chip and it now plays up. Can you post the readout of the immo-chip here
or pm me ? I think something else plays up Wink

b.t.w. i always use monoscan with a cheap KKL dongle to pre-read-out via obd2 or benchjob the immo on these. Never any pin-contact-issue Wink

i had another 10000% stock m5 beetle ecu come through the other day. tested my bench harness and vcds and received the same "too many comm errors to continue".  Huh

Perhaps a update ? 

Please check the other ecu also, if this is haveing the same firmware + immochip.

Added immo-off chip for that JJ based ecu.

Would like to know what software the other one has inside...

I attached the correct way to de-immo this sucka.

VAG COM will not work with pin 43 connected to +12v

Pin 43 should only be at +12v when programming, and ~open at all other times.

100% true..  no decent vagcom-session can be made is the PROGRAMMING-pin is enabled.
It's only used for flashing the ecu. Not diagnostics...
