...which should be an easy task, except that there seems to be a surge of obd-vag-kkl cables being sold with the bm chip, which thoroughly limits the range of use.

Galletto cables all seem to be ft232rl? -because they are based on the serial# of the cable, so it CAN'T be a bm chip which has no serial#.

vag-tacho cables consistently seem to be an ft232rl with a specifit EPT.

are the mpps cables also ft232rl with a specific EPT?

Perhaps the cables that NEED to have a specific image will always be ft232rl?

Should I buy a MPPS cable hoping it's an ft232rl?
or buy an ft232rl cable hoping it'll work with MPPS?
---------------------------------
another question:

ftprog is a newer version of mprog. ftprog doesn't see or save ept's, it reads & saves xps?(or something like that)

is there a difference? is there a specific reason to stick with the mprog/EPT vs the newer ft_prog format?

only cable that will work with mpps software, is an mpps cable. There's additional circuitry inside, as well as the ft232 serial driver.

there are kkl cables with the 232r chipset available, if you really need one. hunt around on ebay and the likes.

thx sweegie,

even these $20 v12/13 mpps knockoffs have the additional circuitry?

-are they sensitive to having ept's swapped?
-will they also work as ft232r dumb cables?

MPPS is only useful with MPPS sofware I'm afraid.

I think mprog is easier to use, you can use ft_prog to do the same things, you just have to set the cable up manually. Loading an ept is easier, mprog wins

I bought an FT232RL cable from ebay for £6 odd, search for the 232RL and they come up

Thanks for the input about ftprog vs mprog.

Right, I searched ft232RL, and ended up with a FT232BM cable. TWICE. Angry

I like the universal aspect of a dumb ft232rl cable, but I'll prolly end up with an MPPS cable, since it covers all the bases more reliably (that seems the consensus of mpps vs galletto threads anyway).
MPPS and my KII-USB should hold me just fine.

I have a spare 232RL sitting here, I'll trade you for a BM.

damn, that'd be perfect, but I don't tend to sit on unused items like that. I promptly sent them both back, refund plus mailing fees, and reported the seller.  It's remarkable how quickly the sellers' english improved. those cables have since been re-listed as FT232BL Roll Eyes
