Hi, folks!

I am a newbie concerning ECU tuning. I have read a lot and there is still a lot to read to become familiar with ECU tuning. Up to now there are some points which are open, that means there are some topics which are confusing me and therefore I would like kindly ask you here to help me getting through this stuff.

1) Disassembler like IDA - Pro:

Reading through the stuff of reading/flashing the ECU i sometimes come across the fact that a disassembler is needed to interpret the raw binary file from the ECU. Now I am not sure when i need a dissasembler? Up to now I thought that I can read out the ECU via OBD-II and then analyse respectively edit maps via appropriate software like WinOLS.

2) .BIN vs. ORI:

Sometimes i read that the eeprom content of the ECU is within the .bin - file which I get by readying the eeprom content via OBD-II port. Mostly you can find ORI-files for certain models which should due to my understanding stand for the content of the eeprom (ECU unchanganged and so not tuned). Where is the difference here? Or is the .bin - file a seperate one with other information?

3) XDF, Damos, OLS and ASAP2:

Due to my understanding Damos files are definition files which are giving you the information concerning the starting adress of certain maps within the ECU and that means eeprom. So they are created by ECU vendors for the car manufacturers. But where is the difference to ASAP2 or XDF files? Are xdf files ones which were made by "normal" people? What are OLS-files? Special definition files?

4) OLS300 vs. Ostrich 2.0:

I found out that it is quite good to have an emulator for the analysis of certain maps and for loggins and so on. So firstly i found the OLS300 which is only sold to companies and also to expensive for non-professional usw. So then i noticed that some poeple are also using Ostrich 2.0. Now i wanted to ask if this emulator could be used on every car respectively ECU or are there limitations? I would like to use such an emulator preferably for VAG cars. Or are there other good emulators too?

5) Software for ECU remapping:

Is there any software available (and affordable) which is good for newbies, which means that some of the most important maps are shown and so on? Up to now I found out that WinOLS is the most important software but used by professionals and maybe sometimes a bit too difficult to use? Then there is TunerPro RT which is not so expensive. And there is also ECM Titanium which should be very good for analysing maps but very expensive? Can anybody recomend a good ECU remapping software?

Sorry for so many questions but i wasn't able to find the answers for them.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, read the Wiki atleast 30 times and you'll just get to grips.  I spend a good month at work (summer placement), trying to get to grips with how it all worked.

Start with fuel first, always get that right, and you should be okay!

I'm using WinOLS which costs like 1000 euros or something, but if you can use Google, you can find a copy..  Not that I'm condoning this.

TunerPro works too, but I'm used to WinOLS and I like it.

What ECU are you trying to tune?

You can believe me I am reading Smiley I will still try it with http://s4wiki.com/wiki/Tuning

Maybe I will test TunerPro too. Up to now i only tryed to work with WinOLS.

Trying to tune:

Have an old Golf with GTI engine and an Audi with TDI engine which i would like to tune a bit.

Cannot understand why disassembling and when? Is it when there is no "Funktionsrahmen" to know where certain values/maps are respectively which sensors/actuators are responsible for which functions?

@adam: Where did you done the summe placement to get deeper knowledge about this stuff here?

You dont need disassembling anything to change your file.

tunerPro with xdf file are good starting point. you can simply download xdf with same # original file (if you cant find your ECU defenition, use any. 06A906032DR for example) and open both in tunerPro to see how it works. Anyway do not flash it, you need your own original file. and definition for it .

also do not forget about checksum if you want to flash changed file ($15 MTX plugin works great for me)
and always before flashing check your file with me7check

dont know about TDI, because am newbie too and works only with 1.8t me7.5:)

I meant that i did a summer placement, and, instead of working there, I just spent hours trawling this site! hahaha

You need to know what ECU you're tuning, and what type of software is on it, be it AM, HN, etc.

Mine is an HN.  You'll need the corresponding "map pack" which will tell WinOLS where to look for the maps.

Some people kindly upload their map packs.  I started with Gonzo's tune, but it's hugely editted now.
