diagnose a check engine light? and to what level of diagnostics are you looking for, are you looking to do on-demand testing? or just read out codes and values?

i use IDS with a VCM II on fords..... but that's dealer stuff

if your looking to do code reading, PIDS, $100-500 will cover most all of it,i use the CReader Professional 129

if your looking for on-demand testing, your talking 1500 and up, OTC Genisys is what i have used before and covers a large line of cars

those are just the tools i have tried, not sure which ones are better then others.

Hi Krazy,

I am looking for basic diagnostics. Just to read DTC's and maybe data lists.
Thanks.

For diagnostics only http://forscan.org/ is a really good option. Just needs an ELM327 comptaible interface and some modification in it to read HSCAN & MSCAN channels. Check it out --> http://forscan.org/howto.html#ht1

Hi Eliot,

Thank you for this info. Do I really need to modify ELM tool? I just want to do engine diagnostics.

No just use it is. It works with any ELM327 compatible unit. The switch is for MSCAN bus diagnostics, cluster, radio, headlights, seats, etc..... the non priority modules of the car.

I paid for my copy and have given away all my additional licenses.

You can find it online though.

I have OEM equipment for Vauxhall / Opel / Chev / Isuzu.
I have original VAGcom for the VAG vehicles.

Bru, use the VCDS OBD-II function section...Allows generic DTC check and data logging
