Relationship between ECU and TCU

I am exploring the relationship between the ECU and TCU. I am somewhat confused by MDMAXKBI and MDNORM. I understand that torque values are transmitted over CAN to the TCU from the ECU, if the value exceeds MDMAXKBI what happens?
