Installing used instrument cluster
« on: June 17, 2011, 08:28:18 AM »
I am preparing to install an instrument cluster (used).
My car is a 2002 Allroad manual.
I do NOT have the immo code for my own car (would the dealer who serviced the car over the last 6 years for the previous owner give me the code).
I certainly do not have the immo code for the used cluster.
I read that I need BOTH to swap the cluster.
What options do I have to get the used cluster working in my car.
What needs to be done?

easiest way is to desolder your chip from old cluster resolder it to the secondhand dash

How does this 'chip' look like? I assume: lots of tiny feet (=very difficult to solder for the 'mechanical' guy; best left to a computer geek to do)?

they are normally an 8 legged soic chip like the ecu eeprom
could be a 93c86 or similar on your car and will contain immo data and also should have the mileage data also

or copying the chip form one cluster and copy to other chip. Please be aware that If you plan on going through a dealer to install the used cluster you need the cluster virginized aka the vin from the old car must be removed in order to adapt it at the dealer.
