"UploadRequest" fails. Can a bench flasher still work?

Hi - I was just wondering about my friend's car. We tried reading his ecu so he can lower his boost tables, but he's not in a good relationship with his current tuner. Can we read off the tune by benchflashing? We tried with a standard dumb cable and got UploadRequest failed.
Any idea how to read it?
