This is correct, to an extent.

Year to year, auto to manual are usually perfect geographical matches.

Year Manual Auto

2000 551A--->551B
2001 551M--->551L
2002 551T--->551AA

Yes, it would be very easy to do this... just never got around to doing it. Even if the map had to be 100% the same for it to be recognized, it would result in a pretty exhaustive list.

Scalars (or smaller tables) would require a bit more finesse. And similar but not identical maps the same..

This means that an XDF for L/M will not be valid with T - you will need to find the maps yourself, but this wont be super hard, especially if you only need 4 maps or so. Take a look at the threads talking about how to find maps, or generate XDFs.

You should be able to load the T bin straight onto the Q ecu and have working immo - remember that once you have an active immo, you will need your ecu paired to your cluster, and your keys paired to your cluster or the car wont start, plus if the keys have previously been paired to a different cluster, you will need new transponder chips for the key ($10 for two on ebay).

This sounds complicated, but its totally possible, I've done something similar on a 1.8t.

DD/Nyet - is there a tool to generate a definition for an ecu, given a defined ecu? The beyond compare/hex editor stuff should be automateable fairly easy.

DD - is there a tool to take a known map/definition pair and produce a definition for a similar map? It would be quite nice to have a S4 ecu with immo as well defined as the m-box.

Wondering if I should try messing around with my Q box again that came with the car, That one had a working immobilizer BUT Post CO2 and EGT codes were popping up tossing the Check Engine Light...
From what I remembered, the Q ECU values to disable SAI and EGT were one bit off from the L box... Would be nice to figure this out, but keep on getting stumped... Maybe I should just pay someone to show me what to do, or edit the file and then I can compare with a HEX editor.. :S

After some digging I came across that 8d0907551l is compatible on the Q box, and that the M DeF file works on it? this might be a route to try if that's the case

L box doesn't have immobiliser. I'm sure someone here would help you out with defining bits of a box, I for one would quite like an immo on my car again! Next time I get some spare time I'll take a look at auto generating one, nyet makes some interesting points.

I think you have a mistake in your ECU part numbers text I was looking at today :S
"4B0907551Q 01 026120 -1037- 6mt NA A6 APB"
I believe it should say TIP not 6mt... my stock ECU is a Q and it's a TIP car.

Could someone help me with creating a definition file for this ECU? gave it a shot with several different ones and the addresses are all over the place :S nothing jives...

Now i'm really confused, thought 551AA was manual and 551AL is TIP?

Can't find a proper XDF for the A6 Bin, yet another attempt trying to manually compare the BINs in a HEX editor to cross reference the values got me stumped trying to find the EGT temps and one address to edit out from 4 O2s to 2 O2s. The M def file is fairly close to my Q or the AL, manually offset the addresses but couple values look like the m box in the Q file... :S

Not sure if I should start from scratch again.. :S

so end goal is Immobilizer working in my A6 TIP with O2 and EGT coded out. Anyone ever sucesfully do that on a A6?
Can I run the RS6 bin on this car? APB engine... read couple things about the euro A6 having the stuff already edited out. any thoughts?

Loaded up my original bin but I am not sure if I buggered up my backup (car has starts to stumble around 3000 RPM, no codes thrown...)
Is there a 4B0 907 551 Q stock bin kicking around?

I have also been messing around with my L box ecu and copied over the 95040 from my Q box, then loaded my Q bin onto the L box. VCDS started communicating on the bench and get IMMO code and can do adaptations. Just curious if you can actually turn a L box to a immo box and run the proper bin with immo? One of the nice things to pass on is I got fed up with shorting the GND pin on the ecu, and soldered in a pushbutton into the case, now its super easy for bootmode. Curious to see what you guys have done to quicken your process?

I manually compared several files via a HEX editor and tried to update my XDF. I found that the AL file has closer matches than my Q bin. (not sure if AL has immo or not, will try stock bin next day or so)
looking for help locating the addresses for an O2 Delete and EGT Delete..
Been plugging away on this for several weeks but seems like I can't get a match for couple of the addresses. Would someone be willing to look at the def file and help me out? got about %75 figured out but hitting a brick wall finding pattern differences to locate couple of the variables from the S4 tuning Wiki :S Help with couple bread crumbs!!

Also does anyone know the value for CWDLSAHK - 0x18663 ? My default value is 50 dec. (if anyone knows the stock HEX values around that area?)
also attached a preliminary Q def file I have just wrapped up.
