Hi guys,

i would like to ask you, if some of you know, how much maximum power can stand the 3B engine with the ignition distributor without problems. I meen, if there are some limits because of the ignition distributor and the ignition cables - because of its electric resistance.

Thanx,

If you use correct distributor, there is no real problems upto 500-600hp.
If the distributor is worn or the distributor is not the original/correct one, you can have spark hop even on just a stock chipped car.

But I would advise to switch to COP ignition if you are remotely serious.

Hi,

it sounds good. One well known tuning company in Germany (PKM) told me, that by ca. 400PS there is a maximum. They say, that i can forget 500 ps for a longer time, that i have not ignition power enough.

Maybe if we adjust the distance of the spark plags to 0.4mm and if we drive not so much torque...

That is not true, because with AAN you can not have more dwell time than with 3B. Limitation of the system.

But 3B has much more electrical resistence - cables, finger, ignition distributor itself... We are limited with the electrical current, with the power of the whole ignition system... From this point of view the spark of AAN must be better...

What PKM is saying is still the same old story as over 10 years ago when I started tuning S2s and where everyone was saying "you cannot have over 330 crank PS on a 3B, you'll get spark jump blah blah". Bullsh!t, I've since successfully done many cars over 500 PS without a problem related to spark jump or the distributor.

I have no logs because I have a boost gauge (makes things easier)

Without the measurement of the indicated pressure in the cylinder it is hard to say anything. But thanks for your reply. I belive, that 500ps is possible. Many people drive 600 to 800ps some years without problems. However we must take care, if the ignition is in a good state and the distance of the spark plags is not too big.

3B Motor with the ignition distributor in the race UrQuattro in 80´s had also about 500ps...

Maybe it could also help a bit, if the main cable has no electrical resistance. Is there something with 0 ohm or with a small electrical resistance on the market?

That resistance is completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. All your theorycraft about "resistance" is irrelevant as well.
It only matters that you have the correct distributor and correct spark gap. And you will not have any issues at even 600hp.
