So Im looking to get started with editing maps and building my tune but I have a few question about how I should go about doing it. I have a GIAC chipped 4b906018p ecu currently by the previous owner. That's çool and all but I came across this forum alittle while ago and want to start tuning myself. Now, I never opened my ecu before but judging by the stock am29f400bb EPROM with a socket on the back it looks like I could just snap it back in place converting my ecu back to stock. While waiting on my cable I can't help but ask should I (attempt) to read/flash over the current GIAC chip if that's even possible giving me a headstart on building a file? The GIAC tune is not that bad. Should I slap in my stock chip and go from there? (Probably making me want to rush things to get my power back). Or should I grab another 018p ecu from the wreck yard and go from there and just swap everything back to how it is now if things don't work out? This is my DD so I have little room to fail but I really to learn how to tune myself as im adding mods to my car. Thanks you guys in advance and sorry for the dumb question.

safest way is to get a bone stock ecu to start with...

Agreed. Don't bother trying to write over the GIAC. Grab a stock ecu, 4B0906018P or 018Q will interchange.

This is great software to work with. VERY forgiving. You won't have any problems.

Thank you guys for the advice!!  I am now on a hunt for a bone stock ecu and leaning towards bench flashing it now to attempt to develop a file either matching my GIAC tune or better.

Soo after quite sometime now I think I got my setup complete. It felt like it took me forever to find a 018p box still in stock form. I was able to snag 1 off ebay by taking a gamble with a "new" ebay member with very little transactions and ratings, but for the price i didnt have much to lose. I got it and instantly try to get a full read. It took forever until I realized that I didnt have pin 121 powered on my bench setup to successfully get a full read. Now that i believe I got 1 my plans are to get rid of some emission codes such as o2 and sai, a basic stage 1 tune and maybe a soft 2step. Im not really asking for much but alittle bit of motivation and som1 more experience to tell me that im on the right track. Of course ill take any info i can get Grin. Attached is a bin from my 1st read on my 018p box using the latest nef s/w. Thanks guy for your help so far

Yes I tried that layout soo many times and I couldn't get it to successfully read what so ever. I kept getting the "ECU reports that security access is not supported" and "Disconnecting because no response was received for the Tester present message". Any help would be great?

Modify and flash this (400BB layout, ignore any errors about appearing invalid)

I just wanted to report back to guys on where ive gotten so far with this whole thing. I also want to give a big thanks to ddillenger for helping me get started, nyet for your input and your me7sum/checker program, k0mpresd, Tony (of course) I see all you guys everywhere and to all who post useful information thru out this site that I stumble across. So after tinkering around with the original 018p bin posted above I was able to successfully flash my 1st edited file only adding a very soft launch, deleted sai via CDSLS CWSLS and post 02 via CDKAT CWLSHA. It's cool and all to finally get all this to work but I couldn't help to notice at 1st the "stock" 7psi feel that I havnt felt in along time, its pretty much unbearable. So I swapped back in my original ecu thats been chipped by GIAC years ago and started to do my homework determined to get a tuned ecu with the power band I'm use to along with the delete emission codes. Now that I'm pushing close to my emissions due date I kind of have to speed things up a bit and get my spare box back in with the o2 and sai delete and hopefully go thru the readiness cycle in time to pass. Than an idea hit me. What I did was pulled my GIAC box again brought it in to my bench and made an attempt pull the file. I was shocked when I was able to successfully get a read because I think I read somewhere on here that most commercial tuners put a block on there files to keep ppl from doing something with it. Anyways I saved that file, took it to winols where I have a pretty good def that I found on here, added the launch, zeroed the emission stuff as mentioned before, me7sum/checked it and then flashed it to my "spare" box. After the flash I went out put it in my car and went for a test run. The power I'm use to is back, launch control is active, im hoping i zeroed the sai(p0411) o2(p0140)correctly for emission but so far so good. For some reason my car feels a tad more aggressive and I notice I'm holdn 20psi when my chipped tune was only good for 17 or so psi. Im somewhat satisfied for now with the equipment and some experience for a change but slightly concerned because I have no way yet to log. I'm either going to opt for Ross tech finally or maybe tryin setiz me7logger because I'm loving the fact that this whole process has cost me almost nothing but time and the will to learn which I'm learning. That's pretty how things are now and I'm hoping the emission thing works any input would be great Thanks
