Hi guys.

Been a lurker for a while and need a little help. Long story short, I did an auto to manual swap in my Jetta mk4. I was informed in order to remove the CEL I needed an ECU set up for manual. I tracked down one with matching engine code oddly enough from a member here, though the deal was done on vortex. I attempted to do the adaptation via VCDS with no luck. having done a cluster with hex editing, I found this place attempting to flash the ecu. I have both eeprom files, one from each ecu read and will upload them below. I know all I have to do is change the VIN and the SKC. I'm not wanting to delete my immo. The vin is obvious, here is where I need the nudge. Which address are the SKC"s? All of the files I have seen in posts appear different than my files. Also If there is anything I might have missed that also would need to be changed in order for the swap to work would be greatly appreciated. Hope this is a good first post.  Grin

Kindest regards

The skc key is not stored in the flash file for your car. It cant be read by the nefmoto program but there are tutorials and programs for it in the immobilizer section. its much easier to connect with vcds and change the coding of the ecu original ecu from 1 to 2. On certain ecus the auto and manual flash files are the same and only the softcoding(configured by vcds) is what differentiates them.

If youre still trying to go the ecu swap route you need to identify whether you have an immo II or immo III car. The skc is only stored on the 95040 chip in immo III cars.

Thanks for the quick reply Giles. I have an Immo 3 as it is a 2005. Maybe that's why I'm having issues. When I tried to soft coding the auto using VCDS , it doesn't take. VCDS gives me an error and the coding reverts back or is never changed. When I tried the swap adaptation using VCDS and it told me SKC in cluster does not match SKC in ECU. I contacted VCDS and they recommended I take it take it to a tuner specialist. It was his opinion that the used ECU had been tuned. I verified that it has not been. I know the SKC of of both, so I don't really need to read it. I just want to get rid of the CEL. I would rather not have to buy new keys and transponders to do it.

I tried to check out those files. I couldnt open them with a checksum program. i wouldnt write those to your car without checking it out. What code are you getting? you dont need to connect vcds to the auto trans to do the coding, you connect to the Engine.
http://www.audiforums.com/forum/diy-do-yourself-55/diy-how-recode-ecu-use-your-car-181068/

The coding in the CAN BUS gateway also has to be changed to let it know to not expect the trans computer to be present.
Go to CAN-bus gateway>coding and change the coding 7 to a 6 to
remove the automatic transmission feature.

Some cars cant be recoded but you may be able to get it by flashing a manual bin file onto your ecu. You'd wanna back up your stock .bin file first by reading it off the ecu before rewriting a manual .bin file on there.
Flashing a 032hs file with nefmoto flasher on there may solve your troubles.

Skimmed quickly at work so don't have much Time but just flash a compatible manual file on the original auto ecu and be done with it. You can not recode mk4 ecus auto>manual it has no variant coding so it will never except your input.

^ This. I followed your link Giles. but as Marty has pointed out, I always get a key error when attempting the recode. As to the files, as I stated mine appear different. I tried to write to the manual and it changed the file, something about no hardware, guessing because I have it on the bench w/o a cluster present. Nefmoto flasher doesn't allow me to do flashing on the bench because I'm not deleting the IMMO.  At a loss, feel like I am still at step one.

Are you powering 12v+ to pin 121 while bench flashing? Without power on that pin ive gotten security access rejected.
On another note:
If you can bootmode the ecu and read the 95040 eeprom chip you could copy the 95040 file and immo off the copy. Make sure to keep an original unmodified copy of your readout.  Write an immo off copy of the 95040 to the ecu. Do your flashing. then take the original 95040 you first read off the ecu and write it to the 95040 chip and youve reactivated your immobilizer. You could even write that 95040 to the spare ecu and that one would retain the immo on the replacement.
It would also have your SKC in it too.

I have tried both with and without pin 121. It's not a 1.8T, it's a 2.0, so far that part doesn't seem to matter. I cannot get nefmoto to read full flash. I can write to 95040 using Arg's tool, but the verification fails. When I read it afterward it does not seem changed. I have written using galletto, then it will not read with anything, bootmode or otherwise. I have tried to write virgin files. I have used the (Turboat's) tools to create a file that matches my vin, & skc from a virgin file. Nothing seems to work. Starting to get frustrated that this isn't even possible.

Bootmode is hard to get into sometimes. I power 121 and the other two small pins 62 and 21 all at once. Then i ground the pin on the chip with the ecu cover off. While the pin is grounded i apply 12v to pin 3. That has worked for me in the past.
Sorry im not able to help more.

I appreciate all and any help, also the quick replies. I soldered a switch onto the pads, I have an ATX PS I turn it all on, hit the switch and whamo -bootmode. There seems to be very little support for the 800bb files. Can I write a 400 (512k) file to an 800bb (1024k) without any issues?

Not likely. It depends where it came from and how similar the hardware is. Itd have to be identical. Then you could compare the bootrom version in Me7Check and if that lines up you could give it a shot. It also has to be from a car with the same immo version as yours.
Getting into the 95040 is the only route i think. And i dont fully understand why you cant read/write to it other than it not working. Can you read any other ecus from this bench setup? How can you eliminate that theres something wrong with your bench flashing set up? With 1.8ts ive read/written at least 10 times with no bugs ever not even errors or retries.

it appears I have bricked the Manual ecu. Nothing will read any longer from any tool I use. It will not go into boot mode. I will have to wait for another day off to pull the auto again, but it read just fine last time on the bench.

Skimmed quickly at work so don't have much Time but just flash a compatible manual file on the original auto ecu and be done with it.

I have searched and yet to find a 95160 800bb 2.0 manual file. Can someone point me in that direction?

Do you need ME7.5 or 7.1.1?

I have no idea. Much like another poster I happened upon searching on how to identify, I thought me7 was well, me7. My thinking that me7.1.1 was older revisions and 7.5 newer. As mine is a 2005 I just assumed 7.5. The thread that explains how to tell went over my head. I don't even know where to begin looking for an epk string. I'm guessing that is another piece of software and a different chip to read ?
