Hi there,

Total noob here.

I have an Audi A4 1.8TQ B6.
ECU is 8E0 909 518 AA /  0 261 207 934 and it has an MTM chip on it

After some water damage to the ECU box my car is not working properly. It is underpowered, has difficulty to start and in VAG-COM I get 16985 - Internal Control Module: Memory Check Sum Error
P0601 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded

Everybody is telling me that I need a new ECU.

Case 1: I can get some "plug and play" ECUs from Ebay for around 200 euros but I honestly cannot afford that. I have no work at the moment and this car is the only we have in the family to take kids to school etc.

Case 2: On the other hand, I can get the same ECU as mine for around 50 euros. but I guess it wouldn't work because of the immobilizer, is that correct?

So, If I get the ECU from Case 2, what needs to I need to follow in order for my car to work (as stock of course, I don't care about the MTM). Can anybody please point me to the right direction?

You have a few options. You can adapt the new ecu keeping the immo active. A bit involved and need a few programs to do this. The other way is to make a bench flash setup and read and write the eeprom on the bench you can read your original eeprom and write it to the new ecu or just immo off and write it back. The most straightforward way would be to remove the st95040 chip from your original and move it to your new ecu

So I guess the st95040 holds the immobilizer information.... and If I move that chip from the old cpu to the new, it will just work? No other programming is needed?

If it has the same software version or eeprom layout did not change between software versions (in 99% of all cases its the same for a given Bosch HW-Nr.).
So yes, just swap that little 8 pin SOIC over and you are good to go.
