I love this place to bits. So many folk willing to contribute and I feel like a bit of a leech at times. With that said, I'd be gutted if this place was ever to go.

If costs for hosting become prohibitive or ever threaten this places existence, please get in touch. I'm willing to host this place for free. Gigabit connected, dedicated VM. As much storage as you need.

Why? Just don't use IIS. Problem solved.

17 years in IT, i'd be having snort etc and DMZ's and other stuff lol.   I'd be surprised if it wasn't hit once a day with a hack attempt.

Been running public linux/bsd servers for as long. Never had an issue that a firewall would have prevented.

Same, but I've been on the end of a denial of service a few times which isn't nice.  It depends how valuable to the business their IT is and without stuff like IDS some corporate types would be in trouble.

Ditto, but again, nothing a firewall would have prevented

Depends on the complexity of the network you're trying to protect. If it is a cluster of public facing servers with a lot of shit running between them, then yes, DMZ. If protecting a large network of PCs (generally owned by morons), not having a firewall is suicide.

But a single outward facing web server? Meh. Not much a firewall can protect.

In that specific case I'd use Apache reverse proxy.

Be under absolutely no illusion that this would be hosted alongside anything mission critical. I work for a large data center operator and I've got resource coming out of my ears. Our "test" platforms are growing larger than a lot of our customers production environments and I don't mind donating something to the cause Smiley

Not at all, was just extrapolating a little for the purposes of padding the offer with a bit more info Smiley We own 9 DCs in the UK, the majority of which are tier 3, two are being upgraded to tier 4.

I enjoy the work because I don't work in the NOC, I'm a solutions architect and sit primarily in pre-sales, but straddle support for the larger platforms.

Everyone has their own experience of DCs, I've got quite a diverse exposure as I've been about a few through various roles and I prefer to steer clear of the data halls. They are very clinical environments. Call center like, but without the staff, if you know what I mean.
