Title: Recommended USB VAG KKL Cables
Post by: Tony@NefMoto on December 31, 2010, 11:51:41 AM
These are the cheapest USB VAG KKL cables I have been able to find that use the FT232R chip. The FT232R chip is better because it supports internal options for configuring how the chip works, while the cheaper cables with the FT232BM don't. I also prefer the FT232R chip because it supports the FTDI ChipID feature, which all of the NefMoto premium features will use.

So if you want to get a NefMoto recommended cable that will work with future premium features, I would buy one of these two.

"VAG COM KKL 409.1 AUDI/VW/SEAT/SKODA Cable OBD2/II 409"
http://stores.ebay.com/easybid2000

"USB Vag-Com Cable/Scanner VW Audi 409.1"
http://stores.ebay.com/alpha-bid

I am not selling these myself because there is no way I could resell them and ship them for cheaper than eBay. Also, I would rather working on ECU tuning than run a shipping depot.

The official Ross-Tech cables are also recommended except for the KII-USB cable. The official Ross-Tech cables all contain the FTDI 232R chip. The KII-USB cable is not recommended because it does not support proper dumb mode pass through of data. Also, Ross-Tech states that the HEX-CAN-USB only works with VCDS because it does not support COM ports. The NefMoto software communicates with the USB chip via the FTDI SDK and does not require COM port support, and so it works great with the HEX-CAN-USB.

If you want to check what chip is in your cable, or see if it supports NefMoto premium features, you can use the NefMoto ECU Flasher version 1.6.1.0 or later. Just select the USB device and then hover your mouse over it. It will display all of the info about the FTDI chip in the cable and say if it supports premium NefMoto features.

CH340 based cables (such as those used in many VCDS cable knockoffs) are not supported.

Here is the link to all of the FTDI chips:
http://ftdichip.com/Products/ICs.htm

Any of the FTDI chips that have a part number ending in R support the FTDI ChipID feature that the NefMoto premium features will require.

A word of personal experience: be wary of the entirely blue KKL cables.  I got mine in the mail today, and the USB connector was some bootleg shit, and the contacts were recessed way too much into the phelonic white spacer thing, and one of the pins had broken in the connector.  I had to do a transplant and solder in a new USB cable to the OBD side to make it work.

Did you purchase from "easybid2000" or "alphabid"?

Most cables are crap, but I found that cables from these two sellers were better.

I bought a cheapie all blue cable from ebay seller "cube_tool"

So far its working great and uses the FT232R.

$9.50 USD shipped.

So this cable is not compatible?

The FT232RL is the same as the FT232R. The L at the end means it is the lead free version.

The FT232RL is compatible.

Just adding a quick recommendation for easybid2000; super fast shipping (given the distance), and signed-for delivery, which was really nice to see.

Hi there, does anyone know about a FT232BL  would work? It a blue with a clear cord? Not sure where its from, got it a long time ago.

Title: Re: Recommended USB VAG KKL Cables
Post by: LightS4 on March 15, 2011, 11:39:05 PM
I'm guessing its not going to work, BL is the lead free version of BM which is now discontinued.  This is off the ftdichip website,

"The FT232B is the 2nd generation of FTDI's popular USB UART device and the FT232BL is a lead free version of the FT232BM.  The FT232BQ provides the same functionality as the FT232BL in a QFN-32 lead free package.

This device not only adds extra functionality to its predecessor (FT8U232AM) and reduces external component count, but also maintains a high degree of pin compatibility with the original making it easy to upgrade or cost reduce existing designs as well as increasing the potential for using this device in new application areas."

Any FT232 device should work, but only the FT232R devices support the ChipID feature which I use for licensing premium features.

Post by: LightS4 on March 16, 2011, 03:45:23 PM
Is there more info on the licensing premium software? What does the ChipID feature allow you to do? Thanks Tony really happy I ran across this site  :)

The premium features haven't been released yet. Improving the free features keep taking precedence. The FTDI ChipID feature is a unique ID that is programmed into the FTDI cable and cannot be changed. This will allow me to create license files for premium features that will only allow the feature to be used if the ID in the license file matches the ID in the FTDI cable.

Hello,

I had similar problem. Try to open connection to ECU with other Software (i.e. VCDS or k+ can commander) , close it and try again with nefmoto. In my case it worked after connecting to FTDI-port with another tool.

Greetings,
Yogi

It is possible that this isn't a "dumb cable". Does VCDS work with it?

Hey Tony,

When using one of these cables I can't get the newest version of Vag 11.11.1 to work and there is no "dump mode" in the new version that I can see.  Any thoughts?

TIA!

In VCDS/VAG-COM you have to turn off the setting "Boot in Intelligent Mode" to use dumb mode.

These cables should all work with VCDS/VAG-COM, but they won't work as registered/licensed/authentic Ross-Tech cables.

In VCDS/VAG-COM you have to turn off the setting "Boot in Intelligent Mode" to use dumb mode.

stupid question: is there a drawback to this setting? does vcds put the cable in the right mode when it starts up?

Title: Re: Recommended USB VAG KKL Cables
Post by: nyet on January 03, 2012, 05:03:53 PM
oh. ross-tech says

Quote
Boot in intelligent mode is checked by default. It allows VCDS to quickly determine baud rates when using a HEX interface. If you wish to try using your Ross-Tech dongle interface with 3rd party software (which is not supported by Ross-Tech), you may want to run a Test, then uncheck Boot in intelligent mode then run another Test. This will cause the interface to behave like an older style dumb interface and will not be compatible with most 6J Ibizas and it will be noticeable slower building the list of installed modules on the Select Control Module screen.

The "Boot in intelligent mode" setting only applies to genuine ross-tech cables. The blue eBay cables all only work in dumb mode anyway. ross-tech told me that the cables need to work in intelligent mode to properly connect to some of the newer cars.

If you are using a genuine ross-tech cable, then I believe "Force Dumb Mode" should be checked.

Tony,

I have a Ross-Tech HEX+CAN USB cable, labeled HC464895 Rev. A
Earlier, you note the Ross-Tech cable to be use the FTDI 232R chip so it should support your premium features.  However, when I launch Nefmoto and hover the mouse over the device, it shows:

Type: FT_DEVICE_BM
ChipID: Not supported by this device

Just want to confirm my cable will work properly before attempting to flash my ECU (2002 S6 avant with ME7.1.1 going from tip to 6sp manual :)  Thanks!

I can't get the newest version of Vagcom 11.11.1 to work at all with the blue ebay cable.  The "Force Dumb Mode" is grayed out and I have no option to check it.  All I can do is test usb or com ports and USB says no device ready and then com3 says ready but no interface. Should I uninstall the 409.1 or 311 version and see if that helps?  Any help would be great!  And yes I can get the older versions to work just fine.

TIA!

You need to test usb and have it detect the usb cable before you can change any settings.

If you are using a blue ebay cable, then the cable only supports dumb mode, and you don't need to bother with that setting.

My guess is that the latest version of VagCom has changed something with what cables they support.

Just wondering if the Serial --> OBD2 cables work with nefmoto? (such as cable in the link below):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SERIAL-OBD-2-VW-Audi-Car-Diagnostic-vag-Code-Reader-/260793639277?pt=UK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment&hash=item3cb883216d

I used to have the famous Blue Ebay USB cable, but it crapped out a while back and always gave me issues.  So i switched from a USB to a Serial based cord for use with vagcom, and its always been great.  Just wondering if this same serial cable may work with the Nefmoto software.

(i tried the crappedout blue cable today with nefmoto but it kept failing), and the serial cord i have only works with an older laptop i have that doesn't have wifi or anything (so loading software onto it always takes a few extra steps.  So the lazy part of me is wondering if its even worth it to attempt loading the nefmoto sofware onto it to try it with the serial cable lol)

Thanks!

Don't bother using VCDS/VAGCOM cables. Only use those with VCDS.

for all other software, just use a cheap ebay (non-vcds) cable.

that said, you can try putting your cable into dumb mode in VCDS, then trying non-vcds software

Hi. I tried my blue ebay cable for the n'th time today. This cable have allways bugged me, but today I got some connection requests out of the nefmoto sotware. But it keeps disconnecting, probobly because the ecu does not respond. I tried different addresses to see if something responded(0x03), then the brake system went red in the dashboard a few times. So the system is responding in some way, then I continued with address 0x01 and after i while the car battery went flat. Is this normal?

Thanks.

Hi, again. Today i received my "cheap blue chinese" cable as recommended VAG-COM 409.1. The driver installed automatically. VAG-COM 3.11 works fine. No problems. But NefMoto haven't detect cable. I've checked chip incide the cable: it's CH340T... Is it wrong cable again?

Try to download a new FTDI D2XX driver if you dont have it? Mine blue "ebay cable" does'nt either work, but many says that the blue one is allright. Alltough my ross-tech HEX+CAN works perfectly.

My 232RL cable just came in and I noticed it is about 15cm shorter than my current cable, and my current cable is like exact the length I need.

Would it be ok to put an USB extension cable on the new cable?

should work

you can unscrew the obd connector and check if the usb voltage is still 5V, then it should work fine.

Ok thanks, how can I see what voltage it is?

Maybe I can just switch the cables Pnp?

Damn I just got one of these crap cables. BLUE VAGKKL on it. Cant install FTDI drivers. Useless :(  My VAGCOM 11.11 cable in dumb mode is detected by Nefmoto but I tried  29f800 and 29f200B on my APX TT and got nothing :(

Anyone find a good ebay supplier for the correct cable? I have tried 4 cables so far and keep striking out.

At this point I should have bought a Galletto cable since I was trying to save money. Can anyone confirm that the Galletto cable that is being sold today will work?

These I have tried so far:
New OBDII KKL 409.1 USB OBD2 Diagnostic VAG-COM Cable For VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda
VAG-COM KKL 409.1 OBD2 USB Cable Scanner Scan Auto Tool Audi VW SEAT Volkswagen
New Opel Immo Airbag Reader Airbag Scanner Vag Tacho 3.01
An Ebay VAG-COM cable my buddy gave me

The New Opel Immo Airbag Reader Airbag Scanner Vag Tacho 3.01 was the closest with FT245RL which would not work.

The other two I bought were done because one shipper was wasting tons of time so I bought a second one. Neither have a FTDI chip in them.

That cable works great, but the 232/245bm chip doesn't have a serial number, and as such won't allow licensing of premium features.

yivek,

I recently bought a "vag 409.1 kkl" cable, and found out it had a ch034 in it? and promptly returned it.

searching "KKL OBD" or "KKL VAG" returns lots of cables, but it's a gamble as to which has the ft232r* chip inside.

Try one of these if US (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=ft232+obd&_osacat=0&_from=R40&LH_PrefLoc=1&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313&_nkw=ft232rl+obd&_sacat=0), or one of these if UK (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=ft232rl+obd&_sacat=0&_odkw=ft232rl+obd&_osacat=0&_from=R40&LH_PrefLoc=1)

yivek, don't worry about purchasing a specific galletto cable.

The reason that the FT232 chip is the preferred chip is that it can be reprogrammed (if needed) to work with >>several programs<< (http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=3138.0title=) provided right here on this forum.

I have been reading the site over a few months and never realized that nor ran into the link you posted.

Thank you again, I will try one of the ebay suppliers and report back. Maybe I can help a new person avoid buying the wrong cables like I did (at least they are cheap).

Now if I can only figure out what to do with these old cables I don't need.  :)

Well,

This one did not have a FT232RL chip in it. I tired all the drivers and it still would not work.

So I do have this one coming in, http://www.ebay.com/itm/271132177003?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

But that is from China so that could be next month I get it.

Thank you guys for all your help.

my apologies yivek, I too just learned that those cables are being sent with ft232/245bm chips, and I've complained, but I think the language barrier may be too big to get it right. They're sending me another cable free of charge, but I'm afraid it'll be the same.  One of the original preferred ebay sellers (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=ft232&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_sacat=0&_okw=&_oexkw=&_adv=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_ftrt=901&_ftrv=1&_sabdlo=&_sabdhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sadis=200&_fpos=&_fsct=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_fss=1&_fsradio=%26LH_SpecificSeller%3D1&_saslop=1&_sasl=alpha-bid&_sop=12&_dmd=1&_ipg=50) still seems active, I'll probably give them a shot next.

edit: the second cable (sent free of charge), was indeed another ft232/245bm, and they don't understand my complaint, so both have been returned. thumbs down for "hi-autopia"

Those all blue cables work fine for standard features, but as you can't change or even insert a serial premium features and galletto won't work.

BTW-I've seen dozens of them, all of the all blue cables have had the BM chipset.

No worries man, the GF thinks I am nuts with all the wires and cables all over my desk lol. I wrote the seller telling him that it did not work and to update his description. I couldn't even see any writing on the chip this time and I couldn't write to it either. I think it came up as a USB to Serial port on device manager...  :-\

Either way I just want one cable to work by this time. My standard procedure seems to be order two at a time, check, set aside and order again lol. I appreciate all the help and I will update when I get the next cable in.

You have another issue. Does nefmoto detect the cable? Sounds like the drivers you're using are bad. Have you tried manually installing them, not letting windows do it?

When I had trouble connecting with NefMoto the log shows that the cable chip could not be read.
Driver trouble?
Uninstall + reinstall drivers and NefMoto...

IF your log file looks anything like this, then the inability to "read ftdi device chip" is because of the type of chip (FT232/245BM), and is not preventing Nefmoto from using the cable or communicating with the ECU...

Yeah, I have tried the galletto drivers that were posted up here: http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=3088.0title=  This last time it said it was the wrong device and wouldn't install the divers.

I also tried the drivers that I was sent with one of those bootleg vag com cables, received the same issue on that fact that the device was wrong. Link: http://www.upzone.com/downloads/summary/5-drivers/680-the-driver-of-opel-immo-airbag-reader-airbag-scanner-q00632.html

The last cable I just got, no NefMoto say it can't find a device.  The one cable that did slightly work, programmed it, and NefMoto recognized the cable, but had issues reading the ECU (it has been a bit I could go try again and get specifics, but it looked like the same issue a guy in this thread had.)

Granted I did get this ECU out of a A4 Audi in a junk yard, so that might be part of the issue.

I have the same issue like you friends. I receive KKL interface with WCH CH340T USB-Serial IC inside. It is well documented around the net that this USB-Serial IC have a poor performance and it is highly unstable specially for critical tasks like flashing / programming. Apparently the problem is that the output levels are different from the RS232 standard.
You can check it here:
http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35435 ,
http://forums.adafruit.com/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=35933 .

Also looking for a better interface I found something well priced but with far superior design and quality chips inside.
What do you think friends --> http://www.obd2-shop.eu/kl901obdusbkkldiagnosticinterface-p-230.html .
It not only uses the FT232RL programable USB-RS232 serial converter, it also uses a dedicated ISO9141 IC, the L9647 instead LM339 or LM393 comparators, improving it stability and speed.

Also, Ross-Tech states that the HEX-CAN-USB only works with VCDS because it does not support COM ports. The NefMoto software communicates with the USB chip via the FTDI SDK and does not require COM port support, and so it works great with the HEX-CAN-USB.

Does this also mean that you do not need to install the virtual COM port drivers? I am having similar problems to other users with my genuine HEX-CAN-USB cable, there is no echo from the FTDI chip:

LOG: Opened NefMoto VW Audi ME7 ECU Flasher BETA 1.9.1.2

USER: Failed to read test echo from FTDI device.
LOG: Setting Address: 0x01 KeyByte1: 0x6B KeyByte2: 0x0F
LOG: Closing FTDI device.
LOG: Could not open FTDI device

Incidentally, I have also tried installing the VCP drivers to see if that was the problem. My lead was still able to communicate with the ECM via VCDS but I still had no joy with NefMoto. Same error as above.

Please be so kind and note - I have installed the latest FTDI drivers and have no message or indication in the device manager that the FTDI device driver is not functional.

Please let me know.

http://www.xcar360.com/super-vag-com-12-12-vcds-english-german-french.html (http://www.xcar360.com/super-vag-com-12-12-vcds-english-german-french.html)

I get usual message failed to read test echo from FTDI device.

(http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a409/undertaker985/c14143c6-2d14-4db3-9fdf-742f77d8dc06_zpsf2d871ab.png) (http://s1032.photobucket.com/user/undertaker985/media/c14143c6-2d14-4db3-9fdf-742f77d8dc06_zpsf2d871ab.png.html)

So I do next.

First I set dumb mode in VCDS:

(http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a409/undertaker985/d6c30bdc-1aed-459e-a5bd-8295d5d91ec7_zps222fb8f0.png) (http://s1032.photobucket.com/user/undertaker985/media/d6c30bdc-1aed-459e-a5bd-8295d5d91ec7_zps222fb8f0.png.html)

Then go to Nefmoto settings (VCDS was still opened in background) and uncheck ''Should verify cable in dumb mode'':

(http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a409/undertaker985/a48bd1f2-36aa-415c-b5c6-8e572b4b008d_zps23b1c7a1.png) (http://s1032.photobucket.com/user/undertaker985/media/a48bd1f2-36aa-415c-b5c6-8e572b4b008d_zps23b1c7a1.png.html)

After that interface respond in slowinit and fastinit:

(http://i1032.photobucket.com/albums/a409/undertaker985/606404c0-92a1-4937-ad45-afa149d8a3b4_zps03bdb9a7.png) (http://s1032.photobucket.com/user/undertaker985/media/606404c0-92a1-4937-ad45-afa149d8a3b4_zps03bdb9a7.png.html)

This all was done unplugged to car. So, still I need to try it in the car.

I bought this cable - USB Interface VAG KKL 409.1 OBD2 Cable VAG-COM for VW AUDI Seat Skoda Jetta Bora. It works very well with the com port and VAG-COM, but as soon as I try to set it to USB as suggested the Getting Started guide threat - I get the message - Ross-Tech USB interface not found! interface: not found!  ???
The device does also not appear in the Flasher Logger device list.
Any ideas and suggestions?

Please let me know.

Guenther

Just in case, if this could be helpful.
The com port identifies itself as USB-SERIAL CH340 port in the ports (com & LPT) section of the Device Manager.

Ok well you can use the ross tech genuine cable. You might need to install it as a vcp which you can do under the ross tech software website. Although in my experience its best to use a clone and to install it as a vcp to a certain port.

You need a FTDI 232r chord. There is many cheep knock offs but it has to have this.

@slappynuts, I had the same, and after contacting the seller I tried to repair it with another usb cord. It did not work, but then the seller paid for return shipping and send me a new cable free of charge. He would then examine the cable himself too to find out the problem. My new cable works perfect again  :)

A quick look and a little solder action and this one is back in action. This FTDI chip does look like the real deal (laser etched).

From what i can tell its been more than a month since anyone has given notice as to which is a good cable to buy so i thought i would ask if anyone has bought a working cable that they would recommend/share a link or somethin. From reading the thread I hope all the bad cables are a thing of the past but i doubt it.
So far this is what i know from reading the entire thread and i hope this helps put it all together in a nutshell for others just starting out like me

looking for a
FTDI FT232R or FT232RL (L = Lead Free) chip KKL 409.1 OBD2 / ISO 9141 USB Cable

-What to Avoid

FT232B or FT232BL these dont have a reprogram-able chip that is needed by various software that identifies the cable and is also needed by Nefmoto for premium features to work
CH340 Chipset =  bad, cant remember why just now but you dont want this

-What to look for
FT232R or FT232RL Must be a genuine FTDI chip or it will die with updated drivers also the R variant is reprogram-able which is needed for some software and Nefmoto for premium features
LM339 chip-set = good, this is the one to get

Well so far thats what i have i cut out alot of the why's and tried to keep it simple
would appreciate it if anyone has bought a working cable recently if they could post a link, I finally have some time and money to get working on this car of mine and want to get started right away

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but BMW K+DCAN cables usually have the FT232RL chip, as I don't think the CH340 works with the BMW INPA software. I've used one on a Subaru for SSM K line, and it worked fine for logging. They do tend to sell for a tad more than the knock off KKL cables though.

Nefmoto and Me7Logger, both i use with this cable. Reading, writing and logging. Yes, I confirm.
Unfortunately it takes it's time, approx 13.5 min to write as my requests for Premium Licence were in vain. :-). That would have been a mere 27s ?!
MPPS v.12 takes only 2.2min to write, at a similar price.
Do you want a link for that, too?

If you have a working cable, you can just modify Galletto to work with it. No separate cable needed. Here is a link from the late great Daz on how to do it:

http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/index.php?topic=3088.msg30597#msg30597

Don't both messing with the cable serial. Just read yours and then use a hex editor on the Galletto exe to input it, save the exe and you are up and going... I've been doing it that way through my last 4 cables (they seem to die when stored in my glovebox - Chinese quality!).

No. Only FTDI based cables are supported.

This is because NefMoto uses FTDI FTD2XX DLLs for serial communication. I think this was done mostly to allow the EEPROM to be used for license checking. Now that NefMoto is open source ,it shouldn't be too hard to allow it to support generic COM cables.

However, Tactrix would be more challenging to support than generic COM cables because it does not use a serial communication driver but rather the J2534 diagnostics protocol.

According to the FTDI data sheet, the FT232RL and FT232RQ are both versions of the FT232R.

The different suffix relates to the packaging type, where L is a 28 Pin SSOP, and Q is a 32 Pin QFN.

Original data sheet can be seen here: https://ftdichip.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/DS_FT232R.pdf

There's a cable with a genuine FT232RL here on eBay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185579674465

There's no premium account since forever, the full opensource version can do everything.
